Job Description

A member of the nursing staff who functions under the direct supervision of an RN in providing direct patient care and in maintaining a safe and therapeutic milieu so that the hospital can fulfill its primary mission of providing quality health care within the community.

Job duties include facilitating 3-4 groups per shift, providing alternative activities to group therapy, completing group documentation and communicating with other members of the treatment team.  Responsible for providing education to MHS’ through both formal and informal means to ensure that therapeutic group facilitation is effective in teaching positive coping skills and is appropriate in its delivery.  Finally, responsible for maintaining accurate and timely documentation.

Job Requirements


Master’s Degree in Allied Health field;  Bachelor’s  degree in Art, Music, or Recreation Therapy, with Board Certification or  CTRS certification.  LADAC or CADAC certification.



Two years’ experience working with adolescents in a behavior health setting.

Ability to communicate effectively through spoken word and in writing.

Must possess knowledge and skills necessary to interact compassionately and appropriately with patients and their families on a regular basis.

The Activities Therapist must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients.  The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span, possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status, interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the unit’s/area’s/department’s policies and procedures.  Required to work weekends, as well as weekdays and some holidays.
