Job Description

::The Counselor Aide provides quality direct patient care to individuals with chemical dependency problems or those with co-occurring disorders of mental illness and chemical dependency disorders.  Primary responsibilities include group and individual education, crisis intervention, treatment plan interventions, provision of a safe and therapeutic milieu, and activities of daily living.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to demonstrate competency in the criteria listed in this job description.  The specifications listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and ability to meet the minimum requirements for this position.  Staff must demonstrate flexibility for reassignment to units providing care to adults.

Education: Associates or Bachelor’s Degree in psychology or related field highly preferred; or high school diploma with one year relevant experience in the psychiatric or chemical dependency treatment field.

Experience: Six months experience working with a psychiatric or chemical dependency patient population. 

Knowledge: Must possess knowledge of therapeutic relationship processes, CD/12-Step group processes, age-specific growth and development, limit setting, behavior management, crisis management with aggressive behaviors and CPR training.

Environmental Conditions: Exposure to patients who may exhibit violent/aggressive behavior.  Potential for exposure to communicable diseases, blood and body fluids, and other hazardous waste.  General hospital and residential environment.

Physical Requirements: Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.  Physical agility to manage patients.  Push, pull, and lift up to 40 pounds.  Intermittent sitting, standing, walking, bending, and stooping.  Drug and alcohol free as evidenced by negative results of post-offer, pre-employment urine drug screen.
