Lincoln Prairie Behavioral Health Center is a Joint Commission approved and state licensed facility for 88 beds, which includes pediatric units, adolescent girls, adolescent boys, and MISA (Mental Illness Substance Abuse) unit. We are committed to providing youth with compassionate treatment that encourages self-responsibility and personal growth. Lincoln Prairie provides treatment to children and adolescents (ages 3-17) that present with a broad range of psychiatric and behavioral disorders. Lincoln Prairie offers an array of outpatient programs. We provide educational programs, enhanced Occupational Therapy services, Recreational Therapy, Art and Music Therapy,while utilizing a holistic treatment approach.

We are seeking an Assessment and Referral Therapist who is responsible for responding effectively to requests for information on a wide range of human service needs.  The position is responsible for direct contact with potential clients, patients, residents, referral sources, physicians, clinical treatment team members and case managers.  The position is expected to make an accurate assessment of inquirers’ problems and needs, identify resources to meet their needs, make the appropriate referrals and provide advocacy when required.

The primary responsibilities of this position include:

  • Responsible for handling assessment calls from families and referral sources.
  • Aware of resources in the area and other communities.
  • Responsible for knowing the programs and details of the services available within our systems.
  • Responsible for explaining the assessment process and admission.
  • Responsible for identifying the clinical need of the client.
  • Responsible of information referral.
  • Responsible for completion of patient admission process in a timely matter.
  • Understands the legal admission forms.
  • Responsible for informing the patient of his/her rights based on their development age.
  • Prepares admission and consent forms.
  • Responsible for securing authorization for payment for initial services and the performance of third party pre-certification process.
  • Responsible for entering data into the MS4 system in a timely matter.
  • Responsible for maintaining a current knowledge of the State of Illinois Mental Health Code.
  • Responsible for scheduling admissions and emergency assessments in a timely matter.
Job Requirements
  • Education:  Master’s Degree in a mental health/human services field from an accredited college (counseling, social work, psychology) required.

  • Experience:  Two (2) years experience in the evaluation and treatment of mental illness preferred.

  • Licensure/Certification: LCSW/LCPC preferred; will be required within 2 years of full-time employment.  Successful completion of CPR certification and the current patient aggression management training, including appropriate use of Seclusion and Restraint, within 90 days of employment.

  • Knowledge/Skills:  Knowledge of information referral. Knowledge of the federal, state and local laws that pertain to enquires right to privacy and confidentiality. Knowledge utilization review. Knowledge of legal obligations for reporting abuse and/or neglect. Knowledge of UHS policies, procedures and practices that reflect requirements or limitations imposed by the agency’s funding sources. Knowledge of community resources relating to patient care. Knowledge of the human services delivery system. Knowledge of government programs eligibility requirements. Knowledge of clinical and age appropriate behaviors. Knowledge of the Mental Health Code and Privacy Act. Skill in assessing suicide risk. Ability to make accurate assessment of the inquirer’s problems and needs. Knowledge of the levels of crisis. Understanding of the assessment process and admission.  Thorough knowledge of the State of Illinois Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Act.  Must be able to effectively work with children, adolescents, and families and demonstrate an understanding of normal growth and development, as well as developmental stages.  Must possess knowledge of crisis intervention techniques. Effective oral and written communication skills.  Skill in organizing and prioritizing workloads to meet deadlines. Must be a self-starter and goal/results-oriented. Ability to use good judgment and to maintain confidentiality of information. Strong Microsoft Office and computer skills. Strong customer service skills to external and internal customers. Ability to adhere to safety policies and code procedures react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Ability to accept direction and adhere to policies and procedures. Ability to work in a fast paced environment.

  • Physical Requirements: Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.  Physical agility to manage patients with crisis prevention interventions.  Push, pull and lift up to 50 pounds.  Intermittent sitting, standing, walking, bending and stooping. Ability to use computer, printer, phone and office supplies. Repetitive typing/keying and mouse use. Ability to perform visual and auditory observation of patients. Drug and alcohol free as evidenced by negative results of post-offer, pre-employment urine drug screen.   • Environmental Conditions: Exposure to psychiatric patients who may exhibit violent/aggressive behavior. Potential for exposure to communicable diseases, blood/body fluids and other hazardous waste. General hospital environment.
