Virginia Beach Psychiatric Center (VBPC) is a 100-bed freestanding hospital offering acute psychiatric and substance abuse services for adults 18 years and older. The hospital is accessible 24 hours a day for admissions and includes mental health assessment and referral network. Treatment programs and specialty services at VBPC include substance abuse, dual diagnosis/rapid stabilization and partial hospitalization.

Virginia Beach Psychiatric Center currently has PRN Assessment Clinician (Mobile and Office) positions available. Hours will vary and include weekends, some holidays and overnights. The candidate selected will be responsible for the following:

• Provides telephonic or face-to-face mental health crisis triage, assessment, intervention and disposition at Assessment and Referral Centers or “on-site” at general hospital emergency room, therapist’s or physician’s office.

• Answers the telephone crisis line and obtains all pertinent demographic, clinical, marketing and third party information to determine the appropriateness of face-to-face telephonic assessment and clinical disposition of the caller; seeks supervision when caller requests information/data unfamiliar to counselor.

• Provides clinically appropriate resolution to those calls evaluated as information only.

• Provides clinically appropriate telephonic disposition to those clients whose calls are evaluated as routine; referring to outpatient care as appropriate.

• Schedules face-to-face clinical assessments within twenty-four hours if the call is evaluated as urgent or emergent.

• Refers callers not appropriate for care within the UHS systems matrix to other clinically appropriate providers and/or community resources.

Job Requirements

The following are the job requirements for the PRN Assessment Clinician (Mobile and Office) positions available:

  • Master's degree in psychology, counseling, social work, human services or related field.
  • One or more years of direct or related mental health counseling experience; prefer mental health crisis counseling experience.
  • Must possess knowledge of current psychiatric diagnosis and treatment terminology.
  • Completing biopsychosocial patient assessments, including conducting formal mental status evaluation and patient medical history.
