Fort Lauderdale Hospital is a fully licensed, 100-bed, private hospital that specializes in the treatment of drug addiction, mental health issues and co-occurring disorders for adults and adolescents. The Assessment and Referral Registered Nurse is responsible for being able to perform all aspects of the hospitals intake and admissions process including efficient and effective handling of inquiry calls, knowledge of and communication with referral sources; providing hospital and program information to individuals, agencies, facilities, and professionals; making outside referrals, when appropriate; assessing triaging an individual’s mental health status time; making patient safety and level of care recommendations to the hospitals physician; identifying insurance benefits, pre-certification of patient care; completing all admission requirements; communicating patient safety concerns and pertinent patient information to unit nursing staff and documenting all necessary information in Med Series 4. Incumbent will be expected to complete Nurse to Nurse within 30 minutes from receipt when appropriate. Triage assessments are expected to be completed within 15 minutes and nursing assessments are expected to be completed within 2 hours.

Job Requirements

• Graduated from an accredited program of professional nursing required; Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
  Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) required or equivalent 

• A minimum of two (2) years experience in a psychiatric health-care facility treating co-occurring, mentally ill, or chemically dependent patients, with understanding of co-occurring disorders.

  Two (2) or more years experience in intake assessment activities within a acute psychiatric setting

• Current Florida State Registered Nurse License
• Current Florida Driver’s License
• Current CPR Certification
• Successful completion of TEAM training, including appropriate use of Seclusion and Restraint, within 90 days of employment, and prior to assisting in a restraining process. Must pass a medication administration exam and complete a basic developmental competency exam.


Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of appropriate nursing assessment, diagnoses, & interventions with patients.
  • Knowledge of crisis intervention techniques.

  • Knowledge of standards for treatment in mental health and substance abuse.

  • Knowledge of DSM-IV diagnoses.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to multitask and strong organizational skills.

  • Knowledge of community resources.

  • Sensitive and aware of diverse cultures and their practices
