**ROLE SUMMARY**



This position is within the Automation area of the High Throughput Clinical Testing (HTCT) group within VRD and is responsible for all activities pertaining to the identification, development, and qualification/validation of roboticized processes/systems within HTCT to support vaccine trials, including novel equipment design and technical approaches, clinical serology laboratory strategies & processes, and associated documentation. Specifically, moderately high risks will be taken to investigate and evaluate innovative approaches, including robotic and other automated technologies that will increase the efficiency of HTCT processes. The position is also responsible for providing senior level management of the robotics group within HTCT. All laboratory work is to be done with good laboratory safety practices. This position operates with minimal supervision and directs the activities of senior and junior staff scientists. All work is to be done in a compliant manner according to relevant SOPs, and cGLP and/or cGMP guidelines, when required. This position reports to the HTCT Sr Director.







**ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES**







+ Conceive, evaluate, validate, implement and provide senior leader management of, novel robotic strategies and processes for the (i) preparation of samples for biofunctional and ligand binding assays; (ii) execution of, and readout from, such assays to effect increased efficiency & enhanced productivity in support of the various vaccine projects.



+ Provide senior leader management for existing robotic sample preparation throughput and maintenance processes for biofunctional and ligand binding assays, supporting toxicological, pre-clinical, and clinical studies.



+ Routinely evaluate upcoming demands on, or needs for, the Automation group and recommend/implement workflow or staffing changes.



+ Proactively be aware of, evaluate, and implement new robotic technologies to enhance the efficiency of existing or new assays.



+ Manage and provide guidance for the preparation of instrument-related user requirement documents, qualification/validation reports, technical reports, standard operating procedures and other documentation, as needed.



+ Provide expert suggestions and guidance to other VRD colleagues on optimal robotic instruments and instrument configurations for immunological and molecular assays, as needed.







**QUALIFICATIONS**







+ This position requires a Ph.D. with at least 10 years of relevant academic, pharmaceutical, or biotechnology laboratory post-PhD experience.



+ A strong background in robotics and/or biotechnology is preferred, prior training or experience in immunological and/or microbiological (bacteriology or virology) assay development is a plus.



+ Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills are required.



+ In addition to the above, prior management experience at the team or group level, and training in a cGLP environment and other international regulatory guidelines, is preferred.
