Position Description

This position is responsible for the delivery of operational reports and quantitative analyses of utilization, healthcare costs, and population analytics for serious illness care programs and palliative care services within Optum.   This resource will collaborate with other Healthcare Economics and reporting experts across UHG to provide management with key operational metrics and program performance analytics on a regular basis and owns communication of statistical findings and conclusions to the leadership team.  Part of the role includes reporting and Healthcare Economics support for market-level and/or site strategic plans, growth planning deliverables and detailed operational analyses.   Daily responsibilities include data management, reporting and analytic deliverable development, and ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of all deliverables.   Additional responsibilities involve collaboration with other Healthcare Economics and reporting teams for market sizing, strategic trend identification, monitoring medical cost trend, supporting client billing processes, issue resolution and technical solutions related to data, data flow and algorithm development.  

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Develops full understanding of clinical programs being measured and set performance goals

  • Works with leadership and internal teams (e.g. Healthcare Economics, SalesForce, IT) to build and deliver operational reports

  • Identifies and implements appropriate analytic approaches and methodologies, working in partnership with other Healthcare Economics experts in the organization

  • Performs statistical analyses to determine effectiveness of clinical programs (e.g. matched-cohort analysis, pre-post analysis, clinical trial results)

  • Designs, produces and supports development of clinical dashboards, operational reports and key performance indicator reports to meet specific business requirements (e.g.  local markets, external customers)
  • Works with Clinical teams to identify areas of opportunity to drive quality and financial performance of programs and develops conclusions and recommendations
  • Identifies trend drivers, medical cost trends, membership trends, and distributes forecast reporting for decision making
  • Develops market-sizing analyses to support growth planning
  • Partners with population analytics Healthcare Economics team in support of patient identification and stratification
  • Communicates results to relevant audiences and incorporates results into forecasting process and reporting
  • Participates in the planning, development, and deployment  of business strategy

Required Qualifications:

  • Master or Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Statistics, Finance, Health Administration, Mathematics or related field

  • 4+ years of experience in health care analytics

  • 5+ years of work experience with clinical operational reporting

  • Proficiency with MS Office suite (including Excel, Access, Word, and PowerPoint)

  • An intermediate level proficiency with Tableau, SQL, SAS and/or other statistical programs

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expertise in palliative care/serious illness care

  • Experience with statistical value models (e.g. matched-cohort analysis)

  • Experience with SalesForce and associated reporting  

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including ability to present ideas and concepts effectively
