As Associate General Counsel, you will acquire deep knowledge of the industry and the specific business practices within UnitedHealth Group so as to best advise senior business leaders. You will provide litigation support to our West region UnitedHealthcare businesses, including those located in California and Nevada.  In that role, you will provide legal counsel and services to our Medicare, Medicaid and commercial lines of business on issues concerning the rights, obligations, risks and privileges of the organization. You will manage litigation risks independently and where appropriate, hire and manage outside counsel, including managing strategy, tasks, and costs.  You will work to protect the organization's rights in litigation, settlements and contract negotiations.    
 
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Support all UnitedHealthcare West region lines of business on risk management, pre-litigation and litigation issues
  • Provide legal advice and services on complex and sensitive matters regarding various laws applicable to health care concerning the rights, obligations, risks and privileges of the organization
  • Manage litigation risks independently, and where appropriate, retain and manage outside counsel on all aspects of arbitration and litigation on behalf of UnitedHealthcare
  • Provide legal advice and counsel and protect the organization's rights in litigation, settlements, and contract negotiations
  • Acquire deep knowledge of the industry and the specific business practices within UnitedHealth Group so as to best advise senior business leaders
  • Position reports directly to Senior Associate General Counsel
Required Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctorate degree
  • Admission to practice law in at least one state
  • 7+ years of complex litigation experience
  • First-hand experience with pleadings, discovery, motion practice and trial preparation
  • Knowledge of U.S., state contract, corporate health care and regulatory law
  • Experience with regulatory agencies and administrative experience with state insurance regulations
  • Understanding of health care benefit coverage and medical policy development
  • Proven success in collaborating across a matrixed business and legal environment
  • Demonstrated understanding of business problems related to assigned legal projects
  • Well developed written and verbal communications skills
  • Excellent presentation skills
  • Ability to evaluate and determine appropriate legal course of action to meet business unit needs
  • Ability to build and maintain rapport with superiors, peers, subordinates, and external company contacts
     
    Preferred Qualifications:
  • CA or NV Bar Admission
  • First-hand complex litigation experience through arbitration hearing and/or state and/or federal court trial
  • Prior managed care legal experience
  • Strong understanding of health insurance and / or managed care industry
  • Significant trial and / or arbitration experience in the state of California
  • Familiarity with California healthcare laws and regulations, including Knox Keene Act and MediCal as well as Medicare, commercial lines of business and HIPAA
