Job Details

Serve as Attending Veterinarian with clinical responsibilities, ensuring high quality clinical veterinary medicine throughout the animal facilities. Regular interaction with CM colleagues fulfilling key regulatory responsibilities, the site Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), and representatives of outside regulatory agencies including USDA and FDA. There is regular interaction with colleagues fulfilling the key regulatory responsibilities of the applicable local regulations and AAALAC International guidelines. Assure the quality of care and animal facility environment is in compliance with corporate standards and policies; local, state, regional and federal regulations; and AAALAC guidelines.


+ Serve as Attending Veterinarian on the IACUC with overall responsibility for the care and use of laboratory animals at the La Jolla site.

+ Facilitate the smooth and efficient operation of the site IACUC and related subcommittees, including facilitating animal use protocol review using a web-based system, coordinating and documenting IACUC meetings and semiannual reviews, and record-keeping

+ Participant in regulatory inspections/site visits such as USDA, FDA, AAALAC and internal auditing groups.

+ Provide high quality veterinary care to diverse species of research animals in support of Pfizer's portfolio; oversee the veterinary teams performing care on regulated species; serve on a rotational basis to provide veterinary care coverage on weekends and holidays

+ Interact with in vivo scientists to understand their research needs; engaging in a flexible and constructive manner, address matters of ethical review with a focus on 3Rs, humane endpoints and adverse effects; provide input to CM research projects in support of Pfizer's portfolio

+ Assist investigators in understanding IACUC expectations and in the writing and preparation of animal use protocols; provide expertise and interpretation of animal welfare regulations to investigators as needed

+ Develop and maintain the relevant sections of SOPs, the program description, and training documents to assure the quality of site operations and regulatory compliance

+ Serve as representative on local, site, and global teams.

+ Actively participate on or lead CM teams

+ Is required to work under one or more of the following: the United States Department of Agriculture Animal Welfare Act and associated Regulations and Standards, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, Good Laboratory Practices, Public Health Service Policy and/or AAALAC accreditation standards.


Educational Background:

+ DVM; license to practice in the US

+ Board certified by ACLAM or other relevant certification in the US (or equivalent board certification) required

Work Experience:

+ Laboratory animal medicine experience with record of increased responsibilities and accomplishments.

+ In general, a colleague at this level will have a minimum 10 years of laboratory animal care and medicine and a minimum 3-5 years IACUC experience.

+ Highly skilled clinical veterinarian with direct experience in research animal welfare oversight, quality assurance, and IACUC functions in a large biotechnical/pharmaceutical company

+ Must possess clear understanding of regulations (e.g. USDA, GLP) and AAALAC accreditation standards related to the use of animals in research, teaching, and testing

+ All colleagues should have functional knowledge of Microsoft Office, Outlook, calendar management and Internet Explorer.

+ Colleagues should be able to use online systems such as time tracking and document management. (e.g. SharePoint, Activity Tracker).

+ Knowledge and use of other systems based upon job function may be required: Experience with analysis software/validated data capture systems (e.g. Biobook)
