Employment Counsel assists with various legal matters for UHS and its subsidiaries. Monitors and responds to incoming employment law requests and inquiries including agency charges (EEOC, DOL, OSHA, etc.) and attorney demand letters.

Provides support to UHS and facility HR departments; dentifies and analyzes legal issues related to employment matters including wage and hour issues. Prepares and provides case law research and analysis and drafts various correspondence.   Presents clear recommendations, and assures legal compliance for company employment issues which may include investigation and disciplinary decisions.

Manages litigation or arbitration and/or works with outside employment counsel on various employment related matters.

Provides assistance on other miscellaneous matters as deemed appropriate and necessary by supervising attorney.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Effectively manages a high volume caseload of agency charges relating to employment matters (EEOC, DOL, state human rights agencies) as well as other healthcare compliance matters (OSHA, OCR). Manages and oversees preparation of responses to such charges and attorney demand letters, providing relevant information and documentation to defend the company’s position against claims of discrimination, harassment, retaliatory discharge and/or alleged wage and hour violations, as needed.  Coordinates and represents the company in mediation efforts when appropriate.
  • Reviews and/or prepares employment related documents including but not limited to employment agreements, staffing contracts and settlement agreements.
  • Provides advice and counsel to the field in connection with employment issues including policy implementation and interpretation, operational decisions, pay practices, layoffs and disciplinary decisions.
  • Manages and coordinates with outside counsel for litigation, administrative and regulatory matters as needed. 
  • Researches and prepares legal opinions concerning employment law and compliance.

 

Job Requirements

Law Degree with a minimum of five years of experience as an attorney and be admitted into the state bar.

Strong knowledge of laws, regulations and issues relative to employment law, human resource compliance, administrative agency charge processing and a general understanding of the healthcare industry.

Strong background in legal research and writing.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).

Excellent communication, organizational, analytical and interpersonal skills.  Ability to manage and respond to multiple priorities in a fast paced environment.
