Lincoln Prairie Behavioral Health Center is a Joint Commission approved and state licensed facility for 88 beds, which includes pediatric units, adolescent girls, adolescent boys, and MISA (Mental Illness Substance Abuse) unit. We are committed to providing youth with compassionate treatment that encourages self-responsibility and personal growth. Lincoln Prairie provides treatment to children and adolescents (ages 3-17) that present with a broad range of psychiatric and behavioral disorders. Lincoln Prairie offers an array of outpatient programs. We provide educational programs, enhanced Occupational Therapy services, Recreational Therapy, Art and Music Therapy, while utilizing a holistic treatment approach.

 

We are seeking a Behavioral Health Technician/Specialist to support Lincoln Prairie’s mission. The BHT/S is a member of the interdisciplinary team who assists in total client care through implementation of appropriate therapeutic approaches and related nursing functions within the therapeutic environment.  The BHT/S provides direct patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse, facilitating a therapeutic and safe milieu by appropriate interaction with clients and ensuring the proper level of resident supervision is maintained.  Primary responsibilities include recording patient vital signs, assisting with head to toe assessments and proper clinical documentation, maintaining all patient health data and records, running therapeutic group sessions, maintaining a safe and therapeutic milieu including crisis intervention and performing Q15 observation rounds while working within the ethical boundaries of the field.  Additional tasks include intervening therapeutically to suicidal gesture, assault behavior, elopement attempts or inappropriate behavior, communicating intervention to Charge Nurse, assisting the proper handling of emergencies of the unit and hospital, assisting with client admission, and participating in planning and organizing the daily activities of the unit program. The BHT/S also assists with orienting new personnel, as assigned and accepts reassignments to other units, when necessary.

 

The primary responsibilities of this position include:

  • Provide direct patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.
  • Maintains a safe, therapeutic environment.
  • Conducts groups appropriately.
  • Maintain accurate and complete data and records.
  • Communicates therapeutically and age appropriately.
  • Intervenes with suicidal gestures, inappropriate behaviors, elopements, etc., using proper CPI technique.
  • Properly implements restraint, seclusion and therapeutic holds based upon the age, size and clinical issues of the patient.
  • Therapeutically communicate with patients. Assists in developing appropriate boundaries and helps to develop social skills.
  • Directs/redirects behaviors, demonstrating appropriate behavioral consequences. Responds appropriately to impulsivity issues as they relate to age specific criteria.
  • Assure compliance with applicable laws pertaining to psychiatric treatments.
  • Recognize and communicate the physical and psychological status of the patients under their care.
  • Assist patient with activities of daily living when necessary.
Job Requirements
  • Education: High school diploma/GED required. BA or BS Degree in a related mental health field is preferred.
  • Experience:  One (1) year in a mental health setting preferred.
  • Licensure/Certification: Successful completion of CPR certification, age-specific training and the current patient aggression management training, including appropriate use of Seclusion and Restraint, within 90 days of employment.
  • Knowledge/Skills: Must possess knowledge of general and psychiatric group processes, therapeutic relationships and processes, age specific growth and development, crisis and behavioral management. Must be self-motivated, results-orientated individual who is customer focused with a positive attitude. Must be able to work with clients that have poor social skills, suffer from substance abuse and a variety of mental illnesses. Must be able to demonstrate effective communication skills, have a proven ability to work with patients, and demonstrate good judgment with decision-making. Must understand DCFS mandated reporting requirements.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.  Physical agility to manage patients with crisis prevention interventions.  Push, pull and lift up to 50 pounds.  Intermittent sitting, standing, walking, bending and stooping. Ability to perform visual and auditory observation of patients.  Drug and alcohol free as evidenced by negative results of post-offer, pre-employment urine drug screen. Environmental Conditions: Exposure to psychiatric patients who may exhibit violent/aggressive behavior. Potential for exposure to communicable diseases, blood/body fluids and other hazardous waste. General hospital environment.
