The PFS Cash Applications Clerk is responsible for handling cash application activities in the Payment Management unit of the Phoenix COE. The primary purpose of this position is to process Optum360 client patient’s accounts in an efficient and timely manner with regard to lockbox payments, electronic remittance, refunds, and correspondence, etc. The position works in a cooperative production type team environment to expedite the application of all funds received on patient accounts.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Performs cash application functions and processes relevant to the Patient Financial Services area in order to expedite the application of all funds received on patient accounts.
  • Understands how to interpret information on an EOB (Explanation of Benefits) as it pertains to payment posting and research.
  • Strong problem solving skills to reconcile suspense accounts, working with various internal and external customers for resolve on unidentified payments.
  • Coordinates all insurance/patient correspondence, rejection/denial processing, and appropriately posts information for collection and follow-up activity in the patients account(s).
  • Responsible for cash balancing and reconciliation of bank deposits and communication between internal and external customers for site payments.
  • Cross train in various areas of processing in regards to unclaimed properties, refunds, adjustments, research, payment posting, correspondence preparation/posting, scanning, etc.
  • Continually act upon customer needs, concerns, and priorities to ensure timely research, account adjustments, cash transfers, etc.  
  • Works with outside partnering entities to ensure funds get appropriately posted and/or transferred.
  • Demonstrates good understanding of lockbox audit controls by ensuring all team members follow established processes and procedures.
  • Functions effectively within a team and participates and contributes constructively to produce results in a cooperative effort to ensure that all funds are processed, scanned and batched for posting within established service levels.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • 1+ year of administrative or clerical experience, preferably in a healthcare environment
  • Intermediate proficiency with PC with understanding of intranet, internet, share drives, etc
  • Experience with Microsoft Office product software - Word, Excel, PowerPoint (Word - creating documents, Excel - creating simple graphs/spreadsheets, PowerPoint - creating presentations)
  • Experience with high volume scanners and databases

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in patient financial services operations with specific focus on cash application processing in multi-facility environment, which would include electronic deposits, payment posting, and lockbox/correspondence processing
