Certified Addictions Professional – Wyoming Behavioral Institute, Casper, Wyoming

 

The Addictions and Substance Abuse Mental Health Counselor is responsible for providing confidential addictions and substance-abuse counselling, education, support and direct care to individuals and families within the Wyoming Behavioral Institute’s Chemical Dependency or adult services programs.   

 

SCOPE: The Addictions and Substance Abuse Mental Health Counselor provides drug and alcohol counseling and support to individuals experiencing addictions or suffering the effects of substance abuse. This individual will be the first-line caregiver assigned to the Addictions/Chemical Dependency unit at Wyoming Behavioral Institute. Duties will include confidential individual or group counseling sessions regarding the causes and effects of addictions, therapeutic recovery methodologies, sobriety support and mental-health related topics.  This individual will support the Chemical Dependency program and adult unit programs at WBI and provide mental-health support for individuals and families dealing with addictions. The Addictions and Substance Abuse Mental Health Counselor will also provide education to individual patients and groups of patients within the hospital with a focus on recovery. The Counselor will perform first-line care duties (including activities of daily living) to assist the recovering addictions patient and be able to assist in recovery programming, detoxification support and sobriety education.  This role will require familiarity with addictions support methodologies, modalities and services/resources in the community and will work closely with patients and families to provide information and support for care during hospitalization as well as continued support for effective discharge. This caregiver will support and promote a healthy, addictions free lifestyle with patients during their recovery.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Certified Addictions Practitioner or Certified Addictions Practitioner's Assistant; Minimum of Associates degree in Addictions/Addictionology, Psychology, Social Work or a related substance abuse/recovery field of study (Bachelor's preferred), or the equivalent 2-years of experience in the addictions/recovery field.  Certified (or eligible to be certified in Wyoming) as a Certified Addictions Practitioner or Certified Addictions Practitioner's Assistant (CAP or CAPA) under the Mental Health Licensing Board.  Minimum of 2-years of psychiatric or substance abuse support is required.

 

Main Activities:

 

  • Provide counselling to individuals regarding the use and effects of alcohol and drugs, including the effects of drugs and alcohol on the body (and upon the fetus in pregnant women, as requested)

  • Administer addictions assessments as required by licensure and training

  • Provide group counselling regarding recovery and addiction

  • Maintain strict confidentiality guidelines regarding all patients, families and recovery conversations, therapeutic interventions and aftercare referrals

  • Provide direct care to the recovering patient and diligently maintain patient safety by monitoring safety q’s per hospital protocol and patient monitoring levels

  • Assist the program director, therapist or Nurse to provide therapy and care to the recovering patient

  • Provide community education and support, as requested

  • Provide treatment and arrange for post-hospitalization care as required

    • assist individuals to identify their need for treatment

    • liaise with post-hospitalization treatment programs

    • assist clients to meet all requirements of the addictions recovery program

    • assist in accessing funding for treatment or aftercare support, post discharge

  • Assist with the administration of the drug and alcohol inpatient treatment program at WBI

    • maintain confidential written records of client interactions and group programming

    • maintain current and accurate records of the patients served and the therapeutic issues

    • create and maintain notes about therapeutic contacts, group therapy, assessments and workshops delivered under the WBI Chemical Dependence program

    • maintain group notes and materials for future addictions presentations and programs

    • support and maintain the WBI resource library of information about addictions, prevention, FAS/E and other related topics

    • secure the confidentiality of all interactions and patient records

  • Perform other related duties as required
