This position will report to the President of Prudential Retirement and be responsible for leading Retirement’s information technology (RITs) organization of approximately 175 associates across multiple locations. The CIO will be a member of the Retirement Senior Leadership Team (SLT). RITs operates in a fast paced, high energy, outcome driven, results-oriented environment, working with multiple internal and external partners to drive business growth. The CIO will make critical business decisions and will be a key contributor to decisions made by the President and/or the SLT. As a trusted advisor to the SLT, the CIO will be expected to have a strong appreciation of the underlying business imperatives, broad and deep knowledge of the relevant technologies in play, and the ability to pull together the business and technology contexts into a coherent and confident narrative of the needs of our customers.
The technology stack at Prudential Retirement includes a broad range of software and hardware capabilities – from mainframes, to J2EE frameworks, from mobile applications to several heavy-duty enterprise platforms, to leading technologies including cloud, Hadoop etc. The CIO will be expected to have hands-on successful experience in managing large-scale enterprise-stack transformations, especially towards the more contemporary technologies. The incoming CIO will also be expected to have a sound appreciation of innovative advances in the FinTech space, especially in the Wealth Management, AI/ML, and Fraud prevention/Info-Security arenas. Relationships with venture capital firms and/or incubators would be a plus. 
The incoming CIO will lead transforming the tech talent mix. The talent strategy will need to address smooth operations of heritage technology, maintenance and enhancement of core current-state technology platforms, as well as readiness for rapid adoption of new technologies and associated development and support frameworks such as Agile.
The CIO will also partner with other teams including the company’s CIO, and several other businesses, and technology teams. The incoming CIO will also perform an important leadership role in the broader technology community, having matrixed accountability into the company’s Global CIO. The incoming CIO will be a member of the CIO Cabinet and partner on/own a series of initiatives aimed at the Enterprise level. This will require an assertive yet collaborative, high energy partnering approach with strong influencing and negotiating skills, an orientation towards win-win outcomes, and the ability to drive quickly towards actionable decisions.  
  • Establish strategic direction and associated architectural roadmap for the RITS organization in alignment with business goals across multiple dimensions including technology evolution, Operations-Technology alignment, talent, SDLC, risk, vendor selection, and information security.
  • Create a compelling value proposition for associates to drive engagement; communicate effectively across all levels of the organization to ensure the team is completely aligned to the strategy.
  • Translate the Strategic roadmap into an actionable Operating Plan and resource planning.
  • Active budget and resource management to ensure tech budgets are utilized to maximize value for top line growth as well as year-over-year expense reductions.
  • Ensure active management of the portfolio of technology initiatives towards optimal time, cost, and quality outcomes.
  • Partner actively with Operations and other functional areas to drive towards creative and cost-effective solutions to ensure high quality transaction processing and reporting outcomes, while consistently creating additional year over year capacity.
  • Accountable for establishing and maintaining strong partnerships internally and externally.
  • Accountable for management of security, compliance, and audit requirements required for all systems under the position’s purview including information security related projects or requests.
  • Maintain and advance a mutually respectful yet assertive, high performance culture within RITS. Establish a climate of trust in a “safe to say” environment to ensure the best ideas are heard and accounted for, at all levels of the organization.
  • Develop a strong set of leaders that can manage performance and drive success for the organization and their teams.
  • Create an active Talent Management environment to ensure a culture of ongoing talent enhancement and skills upgrading enriched leveraging existing staff and by recruiting diverse new staff. Drive Succession Planning and Knowledge Risk management to build leadership, management, and subject matter expertise at all levels of the organization.
  • Establish measures, metrics, and dashboards for all critical processes and manages the organization through use of these metrics, providing complete transparency and open communication to stakeholders.
  • Ensure reliable, consistent systems availability and predictability to business partners in accordance with service level agreements and implement the necessary operational level agreements with multiple internal and external service providers to meet those commitments.
  • Implement proactive capabilities to monitor the health and performance of the application environment and provides early warning mechanisms that minimize system outages that would negatively impact the business partners' ability to process their workload.

  • Bachelor’s Degree required. Graduate degree(s) would be a plus.
  • 15 years of IT leadership experience in roles of increasing responsibility and complexity, in the Financial Services industry. Experience in Asset/Wealth Management is preferred.
  • Demonstrable experience in successfully completing large-scale platform upgrades or transformations is required.
  •  Experience with recent versions of the OmniPlus platform would be a plus.
  • A combination of Strategic and Operational acumen to balance longer term objectives with short term goals.
  • A demonstrable Innovation mindset that is comfortable with ambiguity and able to course-correct across a range of plausible options and outcomes.
  • Experience in successfully deploying DevOps infrastructures and processes in Cloud or Hybrid environments would be a strong plus.
  • Demonstrable experience in successfully moving organizations from traditional Waterfall SDLCs to more agile development models required.
  • Multi-site leadership experience required. 
  • Experience leveraging external consultants, offshore vendors and Fin Tech partners would be a plus.
  • Skills at resolving conflict and negotiating tactfully.
  • Ability to inspire and motivate teams and individuals.
  • Strong Interpersonal (listening, written and verbal communication) and presentation skills.
