The CDI Product Specialist, Hospital is responsible for the testing and validation of the LifeCode engine.  LifeCode is computerized software that utilizes state - of - the - art Natural Language Processing (NLP), to ensure high quality ICD - 9 - CM, ICD - 10 - CM, ICD - 10 - PCS and CPT code assignment and automated clinical documentation improvement.  The chosen candidate will be part of the production team and will work closely with the NLP engineering staff.  As a subject matter expert (SME) this person will assist with product implementation, customer support and sales.  This position will report directly to the Director of CAC / HIM.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with product management and the development team on the impact of long term trends related to CDI practices, new coding guidelines, quality reporting, pay - for - performance and new technology
  • Suggests CDI and CAC product enhancement ideas based on subject matter expertise in CDI, hospital coding and billing
  • Defines requirements for CDI, ICD - 9 - CM, ICD - 10 - CM, ICD - 10 - PCS, CPT and HCPCS code development for periodic releases of the LifeCode engine
  • Collaborates with the NLP (Natural Language Processing) team on CDI and hospital coding development
  • Provides detailed CDI and coding feedback on regression and functional tests using Windows based quality assurance software
  • Analyzes coded data and clinician documentation to provide relevant examples for the NLP development team
  • Analyzes coded data and clinician documentation to provide feedback for customer service
  • Analyzes coded data and clinician documentation to provide feedback for sales prospects
  • Applies CDI principals for accurate representation of severity of illness, expected risk of mortality and complexity of care of the patient
  • Applies coding principals and guidelines in the assignment of diagnosis and procedure codes
  • Applies knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology in the assignment of appropriate codes
  • Acts as a resource for CDI and coding questions and related issues internally
  • Maintains all certification CEU's


Required Qualifications:

  • CDIP or CCDS certification
  • 3+ years of CDI experience
  • Must satisfactorily complete an inpatient and outpatient coding assessment
  • Demonstrate ability to CDI principals for accurate representation of severity of illness, expected risk of mortality and complexity of care of the patient
  • A working knowledge of healthcare, CDI, billing companies, inpatient and outpatient hospital medical record coding and auditing
  • Demonstrate ability to understand clinical content of a health record
  • Strong Technical Knowledge of:  Healthcare domain and / or Hospital Encoder
  • Strong computer proficiency with MS Word and Excel
  • Ability to work effectively within a team
  • Ability to communicate effectively with linguists and other CDI / coding product specialists to clarify development of CDI and diagnoses / procedures and sequencing
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Travel 10%
  • Satisfactorily complete an inpatient and outpatient coding assessment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • CPC, CPC - H, CCS, CCS - P, RHIT, or RHIA accreditation
  • Bachelor's Degree
