Job Description

The Nursing Supervisor is responsible for assisting the Department Director in providing overall leadership and direction for the units or areas of responsibility, and for creating an environment that fosters collaboration among the team to achieve operational and clinical excellence. This will be achieved through the following activities: Works collaboratively with physicians to develop methods for improving the quality of care; works collaboratively with department leadership to achieve quality, fiscal and patient experience goals and expectations.


 Essential Job Duties:

Regulatory Compliance-Demonstrates strong commitment to following hospital policy and all healthcare regulations.  Demonstrates professionalism and helpfulness to surveyors

Assisting with schedules and ensuring appropriate number of staff allocated daily

Adjusting staffing, in collaboration with the Director/Manager/House Supervisor, as census or patient acuity change.

Handles emergency cries situations

Patient Safety-In collaboration with manager, works with Medical Staff and other departments to ensure coordination and integration of clinical processes to ensure patient safety and regulatory compliance.  Utilizes chain of command with patient safety concerns that require Manager/Director, Risk Management and/or Administration on Call guidance/intervention.  Purposeful patient rounding is completed at every shift to monitor environment for safety concerns that require intervention and enhance patient satisfaction.

Actively participates in designated hospital committees, including regular attendance at Clinical Supervisor meetings (required to attend 80% of meetings held).

Staff Development-Actively participates in the orientation, in-service training and continuing education of all personnel; maintains accurate and complete competency files.

Ensuring staff breaks occur and/or communicating with manager when there are roadblocks.

Gives feedback, within the scope of the supervisor position, and makes suggestions to staff in regards to behavior that is detrimental to: 1. Achievement of patient care goals and objectives. 2. Achievement of unit/department/organizational goals and objective while keeping the manager informed of issues at all times

Follows all policies related to safe medication administration.

Administers blood products per hospital policy

Administers IV therapy per hospital policy

Able to function effectively during an emergency patient care situation

Demonstrates appropriate interventions regarding the use of restraints per hospital policy

Performs waived testing following hospital policy

Maintains required certifications

Handles customer complaints in a positive, service-oriented manner

Attends mandatory leadership training, which includes and is not limited to M3 training.

Participates in development and teaching of annual skill and competency validation.

Continually improves knowledge related to the specialty population served within the unit.


Job Requirements

Job Requirements:


Charge nurse, supervisory expertise in department specific preferred


Two years of recent department specific experience required.

Two years of experience working as a RN;OR with the approval of the CNO, one year of experience working as a RN plus one year experience working in a supervisory/manager position in a healthcare organization.

Department specific charge nurse or supervisory experience preferred.


BSN Preferred


Registered Nurse with current California RN license

Current BLS certification

NRP certification
