Job Description

The Clinical Therapist is responsible for providing direct and indirect client care by providing psychotherapeutic services to clients and families.  The Clinical Therapist will serve as a member of the interdisciplinary team, supporting the facility’s treatment program and philosophy.  The Clinical Therapist will also serve as the primary liaison between the family and outside agencies for discharge planning, abuse reporting, and continuum of care functions. The Clinical Therapist:

  • Through a collection of interactions with patients and other health care providers, collects and analyzes data regarding the patient’s psychosocial history and current environment, and identifies anticipated discharge needs.
  • Ensures the psychosocial data is comprehensive, completed within a specified timeline; and reflects the medical necessity for treatment; includes an integrated summary with recommendations for treatment and discharge.
  • Ensures the psychosocial information is obtained from the patient and from an appropriate array of reliable informants.
  • Coordinates the development and review of the Master Treatment Plan and Treatment Plan updates, ensuring that input from all treatment team disciplines, referral source(s), and/or parent/guardian (as appropriate) is reflected in the plan.
  • Reviews treatment plan documents with the patient and/or parent/guardian (as appropriate) and obtains the proper signatures.
  • Recommends effective alternatives or modifications to treatment plans based on the patient progress and response.
  • Ensures that treatment plan goals and interventions effective address acuity, patient management issues, and target behaviors, ensuring the goals and objectives are measurable.
  • Provides individual therapy patients, ensuring therapy interventions are directly related to treatment plan goals and objectives; meets with patients weekly to assess response to treatment, level of functioning and treatment needs; assists patients in setting appropriate goals; discusses ongoing discharge plan with clients.
  • Provides weekly family therapy for all assigned cases that is consistent with the Treatment Plan’s specification of frequency and content/goals.
  • Provide group therapy sessions and be able to effectively manage group process to maximize therapeutic benefits to patients; conducts process and specialty groups as assigned.
  • Establishes rapport and minimizes resistance with families to effectively engage them in family treatment; makes weekly contact with each patient’s family and/or guardian in addition to family sessions to discuss progress.
  • Works with families and/or guardians to obtain ROI’s, completing any RTC Applications, scheduling patient appointments, and other aspects of discharge planning.
  • Provides group and specialty therapy sessions with content appropriate to identified needs of the patient.
  • Demonstrates the ability to conduct groups with varying age groups of patients and to effectively manage group process to maximize therapeutic benefit.
  • Ensures individual, family, and group therapy documentation is completed accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Communicates patient’s progress and readiness for discharge to members of treatment team; ensures initial discharge plans are documented within specified timeline.
  • Meets with patient and family and/or guardian to discuss discharge plan; makes timely referral to alternate levels of care and assists family and/or guardian as needed to complete applications; works with discharge planner to establish prior authorization, travel, and other necessary steps to ensure smooth discharge; completed discharge paperwork prior to patient’s discharge; contacts referral sources and obtains appointments prior to discharge
  • Reports all incidents of suspected abuse/neglect; conducts interviews with clients about suspected abuse in a way which minimizes disruption of investigation efforts of the authorities.
  • Floats to other units as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: Must have a Master’s Degree in psychology, social work, or related field.  One year post-graduate work preferred.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS: Must be able to perform assignments with minimal supervision; work successfully under highly stressful conditions; make sound, independent judgments based on scientific and/or ethical principles adapt to varying workloads and work assignments on a constant basis; have effective comprehensive reading skills, strong communication skills, written and verbal; and have a working knowledge of computers.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION: The Clinical Therapist must be willing and able to execute the patient de-escalation methods, both verbal and physical; be able to complete new hire requirements such as State of Alaska Background Check and Drug Testing; be able to demonstrate special training, knowledge and skills specific to age groups, as well as job and/or program specific competency within the first three (3) months of training; be certified in CPR and Handle with Care within the first month of training and annually thereafter; complete all mandatory in-services annually; be tested for Tuberculosis with a PPD skin test or chest x-ray upon hire; PPD skin test required annually or chest x-ray annually thereafter.

GENERAL WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Working conditions for all employees are as follows, but not limited to a psychiatric hospital setting; some risk involved in the event of aggressive patient(s); work load may include day, evening, night, weekend and/or holiday shifts.  Employees occasionally exposed to blood borne pathogens, and loud noise levels.  Mental demands described herein are representative of those which must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job, but are not limited to the ability to remain calm in a stressful environment; and the emotional stability, physical stamina and agility to handle stress and respond quickly and effectively to emergency situations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Requirements include, but are not limited to the ability to communicate effectively with employees; the ability to effectively utilize communication equipment; the physical agility to manage cleaning equipment; the ability to read, write. Additionally, the Clinical Therapist must frequently utilize physical ability for standing or sitting for long periods of time; Regularly utilize physical ability for speaking, hearing, and seeing with correction for close and distance vision, color discrimination, peripheral vision, depth perception and focusing ability.Speaking and hearing may be necessary for conversing with and assessing employees. be able to ascend/descend stairs and ramps; body agility is emphasized. be able to bend body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist; bend legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s); be able to extend hands and arms in any direction; be able to use upper and lower extremities to exert force in a pulling or pushing motion. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; be able to raise objects from a lower to higher position or from side-to-side. The worker is subject to both environmental conditions and hazards, as activities can occur inside and outside with various physical conditions. Mental demands include but are not limited to emotional stability, physical stamina and agility to handle stress and respond quickly and effectively to emergency situations.
