Job Description

Join our SWHS Team of Professionals!

SWHS consists of two acute-care hospitals:  Inland Valley Medical Center and Rancho Springs Medical Center. 

Inland Valley Medical Center

A 122 bed acute care hospital which features the regions only Level II Trauma Unit and is the county-designated Paramedical Base station and Southwest Riverside County’s only Center of Excellence in Weight Loss Surgery.

Rancho Springs Medical Center

A 120 bed acute care hospital which includes the region’s largest birthing center along with the area’s only NICU in combination with Rady Children’s Hospital and the region’s  first da Vinci Robotic Surgical Program.

As a staff member providing support expertise you will be responsible for providing excellence in patient care and customer service by sharing your talent in your chosen field.  Staff will also practice in accordance with all regulatory, professional, legal and hospital policies as well as consistently demonstrate behaviors that model the SWHS Core Values and the hospitals mission statement.

Job Requirements



  • Knowledge and utilization of medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, including disease processes.
  • Working knowledge of current ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding guidelines with working knowledge of APC and diagnosis sequencing concepts.
  • Working knowledge of encoders.
  • Familiarity with patient electronic medical records.
  • Good command of the English language with effective communication skills (both verbal and written) at all levels.
  • Strong working knowledge and utilization of computers with knowledge.
  • Ability to perform under pressure, meet frequent deadlines, and tight schedules.
  • Excellent organizational skills and detail oriented.




  • Completion of ICD-10-CM and CPT courses; and/or a recent graduate from an accredited coding program (preferred). 
  • One-year experience in an acute healthcare setting performing coding related functions (preferred).




  • High School Diploma. 
  • Holds an AS degree in Health Information Management from an accredited two-year program in a college or a BS/BA degree in Health Information Management from an accredited four-year program in a college/university or graduated from an accredited coding program (preferred).




  • Must hold a current Certified Coding Associate (CCA) certification accredited by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA);
  • Or the coder must hold a current, Registered Health Information Administrator  (RHIA) credential, Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) credential, or be a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), all of which are accredited by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA);
  • Or the coder must hold a current Certified Professional Coder (CPC) designation accredited by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC), with a minimum of 2 years of acute care hospital coding experience. 



  • Must work in a clean, well-lighted, well-ventilated work environment.
  • Occasionally subject to irregular hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to function in a busy environment with shifting and evolving priorities.
  • Ability to communicate in writing, verbally, and mentally continuously, and accomplish multiple tasks daily.
  • Stable emotional makeup required to perform in a fast-pace environment with interruptions.
  • Demonstrates ability to maintain positive relationships and courteous interactions with hospital staff, medical staff, and the public.
  • Requires effective communication with the medical staff, hospital staff, and the public through the telephone, fax, written and verbal skills, dictating and transcription equipment, meetings, seminars, computer, and email.

This position may allow opportunity to conduct work remotely in conjunction with the needs of the organization as deemed appropriate by HIM Management.
