Job Description

The Coder is responsible for coding outpatient records using appropriate ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT diagnosis and procedure codes including day surgery, observation, outpatient and emergency room and enters the data into the financial system to start the billing process. Abstracts required information from the record. Determines and appropriately charges selected patient types.

Job Requirements


  • Successful completion of courses in ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS and CPT coding and medical terminology
  • Preferred completion of courses in anatomy and physiology, pharmacology and disease processes
  • Preferred experience with encoder
  • Preferred RHIA, RHIT, CCS or CCA certification
  • Preferred previous experience in hospital outpatient or physician office coding
  • Computer literacy and typing of 25 words per minute
  • High School diploma

  • Ability to read and write in English
  • Ability to communicate with others
  • Ability to cope with and remain calm under stress
  • Ability to respond to pages and telephones
  • Ability to evaluate and interpret information, and make independent decisions
  • Bending and lifting (-10 lbs), grasping, fine hand coordination, pushing and pulling, and prolonged sitting or standing
  • Ability to understand interpret financial data
