Lincoln Prairie Behavioral Health Center is a Joint Commission approved and state licensed facility for 88 beds, which includes pediatric units, adolescent girls, adolescent boys, and MISA (Mental Illness Substance Abuse) unit. We are committed to providing youth with compassionate treatment that encourages self-responsibility and personal growth. Lincoln Prairie provides treatment to children and adolescents (ages 3-17) that present with a broad range of psychiatric and behavioral disorders. Lincoln Prairie offers an array of outpatient programs. We provide educational programs, enhanced Occupational Therapy services, Recreational Therapy, Art and Music Therapy,while utilizing a holistic treatment approach.

We are seeking an Coding Specialist. The Coding Specialist participates as an integral member of the Health Information Services team by ensuring the quality maintenance and coding of patient information, within all laws, rules and regulations of federal and state licensing agencies, and The Joint Commission standards for quality of patient care.  The Health Information/Coding Specialist is to apply the appropriate diagnostic and procedural codes to patient health information to assist with data retrieval, analysis and claims processing. May be required to work occasional over-time and flexible hours.

The primary responsibilities of this position include:

  • Maintains a 95% accuracy rate on Precyse coding audits.

  • Participates in required training and follow-up regarding coding and post-audit education.

  • Queries physicians as necessary when codes assignments or documentation in the record is inadequate, ambiguous or unclear for coding purposes.

  • Abides by the Standards of Ethical Coding set forth by the AHIMA or the AAPC and adheres to official coding guidelines.

  • Performs medical record discharge procedure which includes but is not limited to obtaining discharged medical records from units, assembling and analyzing medical records and maintaining deficiency log(s).

  • Provides guidance to physician/licensed practitioners and facility personnel in completion of medical records, ensuring compliance with all laws, rules and regulations of federal and state licensing agencies, and within The Joint Commission standards for the quality of patient care.

  • Answers inquiries from internal and external contacts regarding information recorded in medical records, within all departmental policies and guidelines.

  • Prepares written correspondence regarding patient medical records as required.

  • Assists with responding to subpoenas, and other legal requests pertaining to medical records, as requested by the Director.

  • Notifies the Director regarding any potential problems with medical record updates, maintenance and/or breaches of confidentiality.

  • Prepares copies of medical records requested by the Peer Review Organization (HIS).

  • Prints and prepares transcribed reports and delivers to the appropriate unit.

  • Files paperwork into patient medical records.

Job Requirements
  • Education: High school diploma or GED required.  Graduation from or current enrollment in a Health Information Technology or Certified Coding program with an emphasis on diagnostic and procedural coding preferred.
  • Experience: One (1) year of experience in health information management and diagnostic and procedural coding preferred.
  • Licensure/Certification: A coding certification of at least a CCA, CCS or CCS-P through American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) required. Successful completion of CPR certification within 90 days of employment.
  • Knowledge/Skills: Thorough knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy and physiology. Thorough knowledge of the Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Confidentiality Act. Knowledge of dictation system. Effective oral and written communication skills.  Skill in organizing and prioritizing workloads to meet deadlines. Must be a self-starter and goal/results-oriented. Ability to use good judgment and to maintain confidentiality of information. Strong Microsoft Office and computer skills. Strong customer service skills to external and internal customers. Ability to adhere to safety policies and code procedures react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Ability to accept direction and adhere to policies and procedures. Ability to work in a fast paced environment. Ability to recommend/take corrective courses of action that would improve the functioning of the department’s systems.
  • Physical Requirements: Exposure to psychiatric patients who may exhibit violent/aggressive behavior. Potential for exposure to communicable diseases, blood/body fluids and other hazardous waste. General hospital environment.
