Cox Enterprises and Cox Conserves is seeking a Competitive Strategy Director of Water and Wastewater Utility Operations in our Atlanta headquarters. The Competitive Strategy Director’s primary purpose is to develop a recommended strategy and actionable business plan within the Water and Wastewater Utility Operations area. 

The Competitive Strategy Director will be the external face of Cox Cleantech for the Water and Wastewater Utility Operations area and will be responsible for managing the process from opportunity identification through acquisition, while serving as a principle member of the deal team

The Competitive Strategy Director is responsible for:

  • Evaluating and defining an investment thesis including long-term views on market growth and development, competitive dynamics, critical success factors for growth, and likely ecosystem dynamics
  • Identifying and prioritizing potentially actionable opportunities within the Cleantech - Water and Wastewater Utility Operations Area
  • Managing the Cleantech - Water and Wastewater Utility Operations Area opportunity pipeline
  • Creating a game plan for developing the most attractive opportunities

  • Lead the development of the Cleantech - Water and Wastewater Utility Operations platform within the Cox Cleantech
  • Build the required sector expertise to develop investment strategy, stratify opportunities in the sector, and execute the opportunity evaluation processes
  • Manage and act on pipeline of opportunities within the Water and Wastewater Utility Operations area of Cleantech
  • Solicit and engage in company meetings and develop senior contacts at companies within the sector
  • Attend industry conferences to broaden industry knowledge base and develop new contacts 
  • Manage deal execution 
  • Present investment opportunities to Director and senior leadership 
  • Gather and synthesize market information from internal and external sources including Analyst work product, external advisor analysis, and primary research


  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 6 years’ experience in operations, finance, M&A, or consulting
  • Executive presence and leadership capabilities
  • Demonstrated research and analysis skills
  • Prior management experience 
  • Prior experience in cleantech - preferably the Water and Wastewater Utility Operations area
  • Ability to travel (up to 50%)
Preferred qualifications include:
  • MBA or Master’s degree in a related field
  • 8+ years relevant experience in operations, finance, M&A or consulting
  • Experience supporting the M&A process 
  • Strategy or corporate experience in the Water and Wastewater Utility Operations area
  • Entrepreneurial experience
