Lincoln Prairie Behavioral Health Center is a Joint Commission approved and state licensed facility for 88 beds, which includes pediatric units, adolescent girls, adolescent boys, and MISA (Mental Illness Substance Abuse) unit. We are committed to providing youth with compassionate treatment that encourages self-responsibility and personal growth. Lincoln Prairie provides treatment to children and adolescents (ages 3-17) that present with a broad range of psychiatric and behavioral disorders. Lincoln Prairie offers an array of outpatient programs. We provide educational programs, enhanced Occupational Therapy services, Recreational Therapy, Art and Music Therapy, Pet Therapy, while utilizing a holistic treatment approach.

We are seeking a Cook to prepare evening meals for patients and facility staff in accordance with approved menu cycles and production sheets, provide assistance to the morning cooks for lunch service preparation; assists the Consultant Dietitian with preparing for special functions and other special events that may occur.

The primary responsibilities of this position include:

  • Follow menus and recipes as provided by the Consultant Dietitian, and consult with the Dietitian or Dietary Manager as required.
  • Prepare meals according to the menu cycle and daily production sheet, providing attention to attractive and tasteful meals.
  • Accurately prepare food for modified diets, consulting with Dietitian or Dietary Manager as required.
  • Complete and prepare meals in a timely manner as prescribed by posted meal times.
  • Follow the posted cleaning schedule and ensure a clean work area and dining room at all times.
  • Document refrigeration and dish machine temperatures according to posted schedule.
  • Adhere to standards for food temperatures during cooking, serving and storage of leftovers.
  • Assist in keeping walk-in freezer and storerooms orderly. Properly date and label all opened food items.
  • Comply with established guidelines for sanitation and safety.
  • Interact with patients in the serving line, offering assistance in the selection of a nutritionally balanced meal.
Job Requirements
  • Education: High school degree or GED required.
  • Experience:  Experience in quantity cooking required, at least two (2) years strongly preferred. Experience utilizing industrial kitchen equipment and utensils.
  • Licensure/Certification: Training in food service sanitation, and possession of food service sanitation certificate as required. Successful completion of CPR certification within 90 days of employment.
  • Knowledge/Skills: Basic knowledge of modified and therapeutic diets. Knowledge of basic food service sanitation.  Knowledge of food portion and waste control. Knowledge of industrial kitchen operations and procedures. Knowledge of industrial equipment and utensils, and skill in utilizing such. Knowledge of basic equipment repairs and adjustments.  Ability to cook in large quantities. Ability to perform office procedures in absence of the Dietary Manager. Ability to read menus and recipes. Effective oral and written communication skills.  Skill in organizing and prioritizing workloads to meet deadlines. Must be a self-starter and goal/results-oriented. Ability to use good judgment and to maintain confidentiality of information. Strong customer service skills to external and internal customers. Ability to adhere to safety policies and code procedures react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Ability to accept direction and adhere to policies and procedures. Ability to work in a fast paced environment. Ability to recommend/take corrective courses of action that would improve the functioning of the department’s systems.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.   Push, pull and lift up to 50 pounds.  Intermittent sitting, standing, walking, bending and stooping. Ability to manipulate various kitchen equipment and utensils. Ability to read menus and recipes. Ability to stand and walk about the kitchen and facility frequently. Ability to stand up to 8 hours at a time. Ability to work in temperatures ranging from -0°F. to 100°F. and higher. Ability to stoop, kneel and bend daily. Ability to reach, twist and turn above and below the waist. Ability to use both hands to accomplish assigned duties. Prepared to handle hazardous chemicals as needed. Ability to see, taste, smell and hear to assess products served and produce a safe work environment. Drug and alcohol free as evidenced by negative results of post-offer, pre-employment  urine drug screen. The physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the functions of this job.
