Position Description

This role will analyze, design, build, test, implement and/or maintain multiple system components or applications that support Optum Payment Integrity's data science teams.  They will work across multiple business areas and with multiple technology partners to provision and maintain a data science technology infrastructure used for research and development. The role will work closely with Data Scientists, System Administrators and Data Architects to ensure the platform meets business demands.  They will also have administrative duties on systems owned by the Data Science team.  


The candidate is required to have a proven track record of working with and troubleshooting enterprise level solutions and technologies. The candidate must be a self-starter who can work in a virtual environment and perform at a high level for our customers.  


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Work with multiple functional areas to understand captured business requirements to create data science solutions.
  • Work with technology area’s to implement server based solutions that meet the demand of our data science teams. 
  • Integrate multiple analytic platforms to make our data science toolkit easier to work with. 
  • Align systems to Big Data and Data Science strategies developed by the organization. 
  • Participate in software evaluations and PoCs to recommend new data science toolkit additions. 
  • Work with software vendors to implement new technologies used by our analytic teams.  
  • Develop processes to monitor Linux/Unix system performance and resource usage
  • Develop backup, restore and mirroring strategies to ensure a highly available platform
  • Address performance and scalability issues and perform necessary capacity planning to meet new business initiatives
  • Work with Server Engineers to install new servers, resolve server failures, and patches and upgrades
  • Ensure security of the environment by managing permissions and encryption strategy
  • Work closely with vendors’ support through ticketing system to manage hardware/software failures, appliance upgrades and install patches.
  • Identify gaps in existing process documentation, or areas where processes in development need further specification then create it.
  • Work toward improve process efficiency and automate processes where current manual still exist.
  • Prioritize and organize own work to meet deadlines across multiple projects and deliverables.
  • Deliver professional level technical work in support of the development of company products, tools, platforms and services.
  • Operate within established methodologies, procedures, and guidelines.  knowledge of principles and techniques to solve technical problems. 
  • Make recommendations about platform adoption, including technology integrations, application servers, libraries, and frameworks.
  • Help developers adopt Data Science technologies through documentation, training, and mentoring.
  • Translates highly complex concepts in ways that can be understood by a variety of audiences.
  • Maintain the Data Science hosts using configuration management tools (like Chef, Jenkis, etc)

Required Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree (Information Systems, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Healthcare Informatics, or related degree)
  • 5+ years of experience with RHEL Linux system design and administration, scripting, programming, automation and networking
  • 2+ years of experience engineering Big Data solutions within the Hadoop or distributed ecosystems (Hadoop, HDFS, Spark, Hive, Flume, Sqoop, Oozie, Kafka, ACEs, Security)
  • 2+ years of experience managing Data Science tools and Packages (JupyterHub, Rstudio, Zeppelin, github, Nifi, Streamsets)
  • 2+ years of experience in engineering software platforms and large-scale data infrastructures

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree
  • MapR experience
  • Excellent communication, analytical and project management skills
  • Expertise in IT enterprise infrastructure design including datacenters, virtualization, enterprise storage, and disaster recovery/business continuity
  • Experience using Agile methodology
  • Understanding of how algorithms work as well as foundational knowledge of machine learning, deep learning and artificial intelligence
  • Experience with Docker and container Orchestration
  • Ability to use a wide variety of open source technologies and tools
  • Exposure using cloud based providers (Azure, AWS)
