Cox Communications is searching for a Design Engineer III – Internet Services DHCP who will be responsible for research and development of solutions for forward-looking design considerations as the broadband provisioning platform that connects over 9M DOCSIS endpoints on Cox Communcations network evolve. Additionally, this role will assist with life-cycle support for the Production DHCP/Broadband provisioning infrastructure (i.e. validating new software upgrades, new security and features, write implementation MOPs for operations staff). This role is expected to collaborate with boundary partners in other organizations (Application Development, Production Development, IT Operations, Networking Engineering, Security and others) to provide guidance for best practice solutions. This position will plan, design, and test complex voice, data, and/or video network provisioning. At higher levels, the Engineer will help conduct strategic network assessments based upon emerging network trends, technologies, and/or future service offerings, and develop plans to address needs.

Primary Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • Develop designs and requirements to meet new product needs and align tactical solutions with strategic goals.
  • Research new technology options and evaluate how to meet new product needs.
  • Provide technical direction and leadership to resolve critical design & operations issues that affect development and deployment of new products and services using Cox's DOCSIS provisioning infrastructure or have been escalated by the Systems or Network Operations Department.
  • Perform evaluation, design, and implementation tasks associated with new services and features of Cox Services. This includes working with other CCI departments such as New Business Development, Telephony Engineering, Engineering Operations, Marketing, Network Operations Center, as well as various Field Engineering and Operations groups.
  • Conduct platform evaluations, platform selection, pilot testing and network designs to insure reliability and scaled expansion of the network. Prepare engineering cost analysis to optimize the return on investment.
  • Assess and define testing strategy and test cases. Document, build, and execute test plans to qualify vendor solutions, develop evaluation criteria and scoring and perform integration testing of network elements, including DOCSIS gateways.
  • Make specific recommendations and assist in implementation of plans that enhance technical operation, compliance with rules and regulations, and permit the deployment of new technology.
  • Define and compile the methods of procedures and documentation to support personnel in the maintenance and day-to-day operation of the network.
  • Familiar with adjacent technologies to understand integration opportunities and constraints and vendor provided software (system software, middleware, APIs, and applications) to determine compliance with Cox specifications.
  • Provide engineering support and consultation to other departments.
  • Troubleshoot problems identified in lab testing and drive them to resolution. This includes understanding and proficiency troubleshooting IP networks and DOCSIS devices.
  • Responsible for driving success of market trials into production implementation plans.
  • Responsible for the documentation of technical evaluations, network designs, deployment procedures, technical guidelines and support/troubleshooting procedures for involved projects.
  • May assist projects and other teams to confirm delivery intervals, validate critical dates and milestones and ensure delivery of services stay on target
  • Documentation of system designs, deployment procedures, and troubleshooting procedures.
  • Capacity planning and hardware sizing.
  • Enforcement of systems standards, policies and procedures in regards to hardware and operating system selection, configuration, and deployment.
  • Assist in research and documentation of application best practices for performance, security, and stability.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with business counterparts.




  • 5+ years of Linux experience.
  • 3+ years of IP Networking experience, with experience in packet based protocols such as TCP/IP (including protocols like DNS, TCP, UDP, etc).
  • 2+ years of experience with DHCP. 



  • RedHat Certified Engineer or Red Hat Certified System Administrator
  • Experience with VMWare or other virtualization technologies.
  • Experience with DOCSIS or PON networking.
  • Must be Self-Motivated and Results Oriented
  • Experience with Nominum DNS software would be a plus
  • Minimum of 5 years Linux system administration or system architecture experience.
  • Strong experience with building Linux based servers in a lab environment.
  • Script development with bash or other scripting languages is a plus.
  • Understanding of TCP/IP Networking including OSI Model and basic UNIX system level network troubleshooting skills is a must.
  • Familiarity with VMWare/VCloud, IPv6, advanced networking/security, and/or load balancing is a plus
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science/Engineering is a plus
  • B.S. / M.S in Computer Science/Engineering
  • Experience in general computing functions and IC properties (i.e. Ternary CAM, DRAM, SRAM, NVRAM, CPU multi-threading, interrupts, CPU efficiency) 
  • Experienced well-rounded Telecommunications Engineer. Ability to understand Physical and Data-link layer media properties and implications as they relate to network architecture (i.e. fiber optics, PSTN, HFC, DOCSIS, PON, RF, etc.)
  • Experienced in data communications and networking principles; standards (e.g., ANSI, IETF, IEEE, MPLS&FRF, Nyquist Sampling Theorem, Shannon Information Theorem)
  • Knowledge of the mathematics/physics of data network phenomena relating to network performance: response time, throughput, and availability.
  • Background in lab testing methodology and requirements
