The Multi Market Breaking News Writer—Social Media Producer plays a key role in Cox Media Group’s commitment to  provide breaking news coverage to audiences in all our newspaper markets—Austin, Dayton, West Palm Beach and Atlanta—24/7.

The candidate MUST possess a sense of urgency, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and sound news judgment.  As a member of the Multi Market Breaking News Team, the Multi Market Breaking News Writer-Social Media Producer’s primary role is to monitor breaking news in 3 metro area—Austin, West Palm Beach, and Atlanta—using a variety of methods, including social media platforms, Tweetdeck, police-fire scanners, email, dispatch sites, and beat calls. The Multi Market Breaking News-Social Media Producer will utilize his or her journalism training to write quick breaking news digital stories for the markets, putting emphasis on a mobile-friendly writing style. This person will also produce and publish social media posts of said breaking news for the respective brands.  The Multi Market Breaking News Writer—Social Media Producer will focus on writing compelling headlines, will thread related and trending content through the new content, and will implement SEO strategies to bolster engagement with the breaking news content. The Multi Market Breaking News Writer—Social Media Producer will monitor, create and publish local breaking news headline and social media posts for each local market, but will also write, create and publish breaking news headlines and social media posts from news around the world. Frequent updates, urgency and accuracy are critical to the goal of providing breaking news coverage around the clock, and growing pageviews for the digital brands in the Cox newspaper markets.

The Multi Market Breaking News Writer—Social Media Producer will work closely with Breaking News Team members in each market to ensure breaking news coverage continues on published stories and to provide a consistent, informative handoff of coverage between shifts.

This position requires a self-driven, innovative problem solver who communicates verbally in a calm professional manner, even during high stress, busy breaking news times. This person must be able to work well under pressure, with colleagues/managers in person, and through Skype, email and phone conversations. Some travel to other markets may be requested.  

  • Possesses in depth knowledge/use of social media products for news gathering/crowdsourcing purposes
  • Displays a strong sense of urgency, high energy and tenacity to handle breaking news
  • Displays ability to work under pressure, problem solve and multi-task in a fast-paced work environment
  • Ability to write accurate, concise, quick “snackable” headlines using SEO guidelines
  • Possesses sound news judgment and has the ability to identify trending topics to produce digital headlines
  • Displays ability to use technology, including monitoring Tweetdeck, Social Flow, live Rangecast scanners, traffic cameras,  weather radar, NWS sites, and wires for breaking news and weather conditions
  • Ability to identify breaking news and alert newsroom staff via internal alerts 
  • Possesses knowledge of police codes on scanners, and possesses a key sense of what is newsworthy
  • Confirms scanner traffic via phone with dispatchers, makes systematic beat check calls
  • Uses time effectively, efficiently, meeting deadlines and producing an acceptable volume of work
  • Must be willing to work overnights and weekends—we are a 24-7 newsroom
  • Displays the ability to communicate effectively with community contacts and excels at developing relationships and trust with contacts, sources and cross platform co-workers
  • Stays in constant communication with Multi Market Breaking News Team Manager, out of market colleagues
  • Quickly disperses information to the Breaking News Team and pays special attention to platform deadlines and strives to meet content needs of those platforms by deadline
  • Collaborates and communicates effectively with others while maintaining a positive, helpful attitude
  • Handles other assignments as needed, showing flexibility and adaptability, and a calm, cool, demeanor in working with others during stressful news events
  • Ability to be innovative in ways to ethically confirm breaking news stories and obtain content and visuals 


Bachelor’s degree preferred or at least 1 year of professional media, social media-digital media experience, news writing experience preferred.. Requirements may change over time depending on technology and company priorities.
