Job Description

The Dietitian is responsible for providing optimal nutritional care to patients in compliance with Joint Commission, company policies and procedures and standards of care for the dietetic profession. These areas include but are not limited to; standards of practice utilizing the nutrition care process for clinical assessment with regard to patient medical diagnosis, laboratory values, anthropometric measures, medications, age-specific requirements, and other co-morbidity factors. Additional responsibilities include; designing nutrition care plans, their implementation and monitoring while collaborating with other members of the health care team. Routine and timely patient care documentation. Making evidenced-based recommendations for nutritional supplementation as well as completing disordered eating assessments, providing weight management education and individualized medical nutrition therapy, meal planning, and providing nutritional consultations. The dietitian is responsible for communicating nutrition concerns to other members of the treatment team. The dietitian counsels and educates individual patients, families, staff, and the community in the application of medical nutrition therapy principles.

 

The dietitian is primary in sharing of general food-and-health-related information. The dietitian provides monthly food-and-health-related article for the facility newsletter. The dietitian is responsible for providing bi-monthly therapeutic food-and-health-related educations in various patient-group settings. The dietitian is responsible for maintaining and updating food-and-health-related bulletin boards.

 

The Dietitian operates with the oversight of Dietary Manager within the Dietary Department. Responsibilities include: assisting in strategic planning for improvement in patient satisfaction; menu planning, nutritive analysis for meals and snacks, recipe development, ensuring compliance with the National School Lunch Program.  Creation of individual meal plans to meet medical allergy requirements while maintaining sensitivity to patient concerns and goals and patient care taker concern and goals. Attends all dietary department meetings as an educator/co-facilitator. Facility and department in-service training; and routine kitchen inspections; leadership in quality improvement of the foodservice department.

 

JOB RESPONSIBLITIES:     

 

  1. Performs nutritional assessments according to facility policies and Joint Commission standards

  2. Meets directly with patients to complete assessments and educations

  3. Develops and monitors nutrition care plans

  4. Maintains thorough documentation and record-keeping

  5. Provides nutrition consultations as ordered by physicians

  6. Provides therapeutic patient-group nutrition educations

  7. Creates nutrition education materials including handouts, food-and-health-related bulletin boards, and facility newsletter

  8. Serves as a resource to all members of the health care team related to appropriate nutrition care standards and quality nutrition care

  9. Assists with special dietary functions, such as holiday meals and catering events

  10. Ensures patient confidentiality at all times

  11. Assists to ensure that services are provided using current theories, standards, and methods in nutrition and dietetics in accordance with regulatory bodies such as the Food & Drug Administration, United States Department of Agriculture, etc.

  12. Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s Degree in Food and Nutrition or related field.  Current certification as a Registered Dietitian with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and Licensure in accordance with the State of Alaska laws. Continuing education in accordance with policies determined by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics for maintenance of registered status.

 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:        

  1. Ability to perform assignments with minimal supervision;

  2. Ability to work successfully under highly stressful conditions;

  3. Ability to make sound, independent judgments based on scientific and/or ethical principles;

  4. Capability of adapting to varying workloads and work assignments on a constant basis;

  5. Effective comprehensive reading skills, strong communication skills, written and verbal.

  6. Must have a working knowledge of computers.

     

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITON:            

  • Must be willing and able to execute the patient de-escalation methods, both verbal and physical

  • Must be able to obtain a ServSafe Manager certification within 6 months of hire

  • Must be able to complete new hire requirements such as State of Alaska Background Check and Drug Testing.

  • Must be able to demonstrate special training, knowledge and skills specific to age groups, as well as job and/or program specific competency within the first three (3) months of training

  • Must complete all mandatory in-services annually

  • Must be tested for Tuberculosis with a PPD skin test or chest x-ray upon hire;

    PPD skin test required annually or chest x-ray annually thereafter.

 

GENERAL WORKING ENVIRONMENT:  Working conditions for all employees are as follows, but not limited to a psychiatric hospital setting; some risk involved in the event of aggressive patient(s); work load may include day, evening, night, weekend and/or holiday shifts.  Employees occasionally exposed to blood borne pathogens, and loud noise levels. 

Mental demands described herein are representative of those which must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job, but are not limited to the ability to remain calm in a stressful environment; and the emotional stability, physical stamina and agility to handle stress and respond quickly and effectively to emergency situations.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Requirements include, but are not limited to the ability to communicate effectively with employees; the ability to effectively utilize communication equipment; the physical agility to manage patients (ambulatory, non-ambulatory and physically aggressive); the ability to read, write and spend a great deal of time of a computer.

  • Must frequently utilize physical ability for sitting for long periods of time

  • Must regularly utilize physical ability for speaking, hearing, and seeing with correction for close and distance vision, color discrimination, peripheral vision, depth perception and focusing ability.Speaking and hearing may be necessary for conversing with and assessing employees

  • Mental demands include but are not limited to emotional stability, physical stamina and agility to handle stress and respond quickly and effectively to emergency situations
