Optum’s digital product management leadership may comprise any of various levels of management, including manager, senior manager, director, or senior director roles.  While the basic responsibilities of all three levels are quite similar, they vary in degree of autonomy, in depth of experience required, in breadth of skills and experience, and in level of mastery expected. 

In general, a manager will require additional management support, will have less exposure to strategic initiatives, and will have less direct responsibility for financial management of the team, while a director and senior director will be expected to lead with minimal additional support, to contribute significantly to corporate strategic direction, and to manage the products with minimal outside assistance.

 

Core functions of the digital product management team includes developing product charters, developing and maintain product roadmaps, defining product features based on external and internal needs, maintaining a backlog of user stories, working with integrated design and development teams to deliver functionality, reporting on product performance, staying abreast of competing products, and communicating with external users and internal stakeholders across the organization.  

 

The Digital Product Manager works closely with leadership from Optum’s experience design, information technology, marketing, operations and business teams to deliver digital applications that ensure an exceptional online experience for Optum consumers. The Digital Product Manager is responsible for supporting Population Health Solutions digital product strategy through researching, formulating, and enabling the transformation of Optum’s clinical programs into the Omni channel product offerings.

  • Lead the development of new, as well as drive and enhance existing capabilities for digital products and experiences, from inception to launch
  • Act as a mediator between the consumers / patients / members / clinicians, business leaders and the technical teams – communicating consumer needs and translating those needs into new product features for the team to design
  • Partner with the Population Health Solutions (chronic and complex disease) pillar to define / design industry leading consumer - facing digital solutions, and ensure alignment with business and product plans (e.g. capital / funding commitments, revenue commitments, capabilities, functional impacts, cross functional roles)
  • Lead efforts to fulfill defined digital product solutions, ensuring solutions follow the digital vision and strategy of Optum’s omni - channel experience

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manage total performance of Optum’s online products to meet critical business metrics, including traffic, user satisfaction, consumer engagement, and financial results
  • Collaborate with applicable business partners and stakeholders (including Optum’s lines of business as well as Marketing, Sales, Shared Services, and Operations) to obtain appropriate market information / data and define consumer and business needs
  • Occasional interaction with executive leadership.  Typically takes direction on strategic priorities
  • Develop a rigorous approach to prioritizing online product needs based on user research, marketing insights, competitive intelligence, business needs, and trends in online technology and user experience.  Drive third - party product evaluation, prototype development and user testing in support of this approach
  • Partner with Digital Delivery teams on the creation of requirements and user stories. Participate in Agile Scrum process to ensure business vision is being accurately implemented and meet market expectations. Ensure digital solutions are delivered on time and on budget, including identifying and resolving risks and issues. Subscribe to Optum Product Methodology and business processes, providing input to further advance the discipline and evangelize across the team
  • Implement and grow a competitive intelligence discipline for online products, including analyzing competitors’ online products and communicating competitive threats and opportunities to university leadership
  • Develop various communication elements to socialize / explain / educate projects and statuses to facilitate decision making with the business pillars and other partners. Utilize influencing skills to build a collaborative culture and foster relationships with both internal and external strategic partners. Provide sales support including participation in customer meetings and product demonstrations as requested
