The Oaks at La Paloma is currently seeking a Risk Management Director for their inpatient residential treatment facility located in Memphis, Tennessee.

Position Summary

The Risk Management Director will plan, organize and direct all activities in compliance with state, federal and other accrediting and regulatory agency requirements. The individual in this role will be responsible for coordinating loss control efforts and making recommendations to minimize or eliminate exposure. The individual will provide leadership and evaluation of all organizational quality and performance improvement activities within the residential treatment facility. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Assumes a leadership role in the Risk Management program. Measures outcomes of risk management functions and makes recommendations to Senior Management on risk management issues.

  • Performs research, statistical projects and studies for the medical staff, administration and other hospital departments.

  • Develops, implements and monitors a Risk Management Program in accordance with UHS T.E.R.M. program ensuring medical staff involvement to identify areas of adverse patient occurrences and problems in delivery of patient care.

  • Develops a systematic method for Risk Identification and Analysis for reporting patient related and visitor-premises adverse events. Utilizes physician-developed criteria to identify adverse effects in clinical high-risk areas. Develops and implements process to analyze and trend risk identification data.

  • Develops Loss Prevention and Risk Management Education Program. Provides education to new employees at orientation and conducts ongoing education and in-services on risk management topics annually.

  • Promotes Critical Risk Prevention Techniques to ensure appropriate release of information, informed consent and confidentiality issues are in accordance with established hospital policies and procedures. Reviews policies regularly.

  • Participates in initial review and maintenance of contracts entered into by the hospital with providers of patient care ensuring appropriate loss prevention.

  • Assists the Patient Advocate in Patient/Family Relations following an adverse event. Responds to patient/family complaints and addresses personal property losses when needed.

  • Participates in Safety Committee and conducts safety rounds with other committee members to identify hazards and makes recommendations for corrective action.

  • Participates in the development and implementation of Claims and Litigation Management. Maintains claim information and ensures confidentiality of claim information.

  • Develops mechanism to ensure timely reporting of adverse clinical events, monitors percentages of identified occurrences that result in claims and regularly reports information to Medical Staff.

  • Receives quarterly reports and evaluates corrective actions. Reports results of monitoring and evaluation activities as needed.Reviews and summarizes monitoring and evaluation activities and maintains current records. Coordinates data retrieval for essential studies and reports. Ensures licensure and accreditation activities are in compliance with established standards and regulations. Obtains and distributes current information of all applicable licensing criteria and accreditation standards.

  • Effectively uses formal and informal opportunities to collaborate with other leaders and administration in issues regarding risk management.

  • Exchanges information with CEO on a day-to-day basis.

  • Written and verbal communication skills are clear and concise. Demonstrates a broad base of knowledge in psychiatric healthcare and risk management.

  • Analyzes complex situations and develops sound and effective solutions. Seeks out assistance when warranted.

  • Makes decisions and acts on behalf of patients in an ethical manner.

  • Communicates all manners related to organization effectively and promptly.

  • Is knowledgeable of Patient Rights and treats all patients with dignity and respect in a consistent, caring manner.

  • Understands need for and maintains appropriate confidentiality at all times when interacting with patients, families, visitors, referral sources and all other contacts.

  • Exhibits excellent customer relation skills as evidenced by supportive and constructive communication with all contacts including coworkers, patients, visitors, families and referral sources.

  • Utilizes and promotes an open, nonjudgmental, nondiscriminatory, professional approach.

  • Promotes a safe work environment for self, patients and staff by complying with environment of care, safety, infection control and universal precaution guidelines.

  • Acquires and maintains current knowledge in psychiatric healthcare, managed care, risk management.

  • Acquires and maintains current knowledge in leadership and performance.

  • Participates in leadership activities. Collaborates with Director of Nursing and Clinical Director in issues affecting the provision of and nursing and clinical services. Participates in task forces, committees and in other forums to promote quality care.

  • Serves as resource to unit staff in complex issues affecting quality patient care. Provides solutions to complete care needs. Seeks assistance from team members when necessary.

  • Participates in the planning and provision of ongoing staff education, development and training specific to the population of patients served. Provides individual feedback and mentoring to staff as needed.

  • Develops and monitors the facility Quality Assurance plan.Communicates the plan and results of performance to the plan monthly in Quality Council.

  • Participates in unit based monitoring of staff compliance to regulatory requirements.

  • Serves as the facility resource for regulatory compliance requirements with JCAHO, TDMHDD, Department of Health, and all other regulatory agencies. Maintains files including up-to-date regulations. Communicates to leadership changes as required.

  • Collaborates with others in developing processes that promote patient rights and organizational ethics. Behaviors demonstrate a strong commitment to patient rights and code of ethics.

  • Develops, monitors and participates in Performance Improvement activities within unit and organization wide. Develops plans, priorities, assessment tools and improvement activities. Monitors and evaluates findings. Makes recommendations for change in processes. Actions foster collaboration in PI activities.

  • Monitors quality and regulatory compliance indicators monthly and reports findings to Quality Council as required. Evaluates progress, identifies negative trends and participates in problem resolution.

  • Provides guidance to professional staff in the provision of quality and regulatory compliance.Reviews records, observes video and directly observes staff performing assessments, planning care, interacting with patients and providing interventions including education and crisis management. Gives feedback to staff and takes action when necessary to assure quality care.

  • Participates in monitoring the environment of patient care. Makes direct observations of milieu and provides guidance to staff on milieu management.

  • Monitors medical record documentation and audits records to assure compliance. Gives feedback to staff to improve quality of documentation.

  • Effectively uses formal and informal opportunities to collaborate with other leaders and administration in decisions that affect quality and regulatory issues.

  • Exchanges information timely with facility leaders as observations is made.

  • Written and verbal communication skills are clear and concise. Demonstrates a broad base of knowledge in psychiatric mental health.

  • Analyzes complex situations and develops sound and effective solutions. Seeks out assistance when needed.

  • Coordinates regulatory and quality complaints.Serves as the point person for external agencies when surveys are conducted or complaints are filed.Researches cases and prepares a statement for the respective agency.Communicates internally regarding findings and subsequent action plans.

  • Implements annual process for review of facility-wide policy and procedure manuals for each department.Evaluates each policy to ensure they include the most up-to-date requirements.

  • Develops process for monthly monitoring of key clinical and nursing indicators to ensure compliance.Compiles and submits reports monthly through Quality Council.

  • Actively integrates developmental age and growth theory into all aspects of patient care.

  • Demonstrates understanding of the patient’s role in the family system and importance of the parent/guardian or legal obligation in the treatment process, when applicable.

  • Demonstrates basic familiarity and knowledge of major diagnostic criteria for adults as described in DSM-IV.

  • Assists CEO/Administrator, Medical Staff and Department Directors and all levels of staff in the development and implementation of the Quality Assessment and Improvement Plan.





Job Requirements


  • Graduate of an accredited Nursing or Social Work program highly preferred or degree in Psychology or related field. Master’s degree required.

  • Prefer 5 years clinical experience with a psychiatric mental health population, 3 years experience in a supervisory role.

  • Possesses knowledge of procedures and principles of risk management related to a health care environment. Current knowledge of regulating /accrediting agency guidelines.

  • Knowledge of statistical analysis and basic computer skills desired.
