Job Description

Kempsville Center for Behavioral Health, founded in 1986, is an 82 bed facility within the city of Norfolk, Virginia. Kempsville Center for Behavioral Health offers comprehensive mental health programs in Virginia. We are a Universal Health Services facility that provides psychiatrically and medically managed acute, residential treatment, and partial hospitalization for children and adolescents with significant impairments in their social and emotional development.

We provide quality care to children and adolescents in need using quality, evidence based practice treatments. We are accredited by The Joint Commission (TJC), and are licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia and The Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS).

Kempsville Center for Behavioral Health is seeking a dynamic and talented Director of Nursing.

Position Scope:    

 

Provides leadership and management including planning and evaluating the nursing service to ensure 24-hour quality service and coverage.  Supervises and trains nursing staff. Collaborates with other department managers in establishing and complying with resident/patient care standards, policies, procedures and residential treatment goals.  Acts as a resource person for Nursing Department, Clinicians, Physicians and Chief Executive Officer.

 

Essential Functions:                 

 

  1. Organizes, manages and supervises departments.

  1. Provides staff development.
  2. Develops, implements and maintains policies and procedures.
  3. Prepares and maintains department budgets.
  4. Plans, organizes and implements infirmary services to provide 24 hour quality nursing services.
  5. Organize and plan workload.
  6. Ensure Service Excellence delivery.

Education

 

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with licensure and registration by the Virginia Board of

Nurse Examiners as a Registered Nurse.

 

Experience

 

Three or more years’ direct patient care experience in medical-surgical nursing, three or more years’

experience in psychiatric nursing, and three or more years’ supervisory experience.

 

Knowledge

Must possess knowledge of general and psychiatric nursing, as relates to children and adolescents,

therapeutic relationships, therapeutic processes, growth and development, limit setting and behavior

management, crisis management with aggressive behaviors and CPR.  Must possess demonstrated

leadership ability, the ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups and individuals, strong

written communication skills and ability to work statistical data.

 

Working Conditions

 

Works in general office environment and clinical areas.  May be required to cover physical exam room,

infirmary and medication room, within RTC setting.  Some risk involved in the event of aggressive/out

of- control  patients.  Must possess physical ability to assist in restraining resident under such

circumstances.  Must possess visual and audio skills to complete job duties.  Schedule may include shift

work, weekends and holidays.  Must possess valid driver's license.

 

Physical Requirements

 

The Physical Requirements for this position include being able to stand, squat, kneel, sit and lie on the

floor for long periods of time.  Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. The incumbent must be

physically capable of providing direct total physical care to unpredictable, potentially violent, mentally ill

patients as necessary, including lifting, supporting, running towards or away from areas where problems

are occurring, and pushing and pulling equipment, such as, wheelchairs, stretchers, and beds. Ability to

successfully perform the facility crisis intervention training, BLS/CPR, and First Aid.
