Job Description

The Director of Nursing is responsible for the development, coordination and implementation of all aspects of the RTC nursing care delivery system.  Under the direction of the RTC Administrator, the Director of Nursing will assure quality nursing care, serve actively and constructively as member of the multi-disciplinary treatment team, support the organization and program treatment philosophy; and ensure the safety and well-being of patients.

  • Works with the CEO, provides leadership through assessment, planning, implementing and evaluation of direct patient care services provided in each clinical area.
  • Assures compliance with all standards and policies of the Facility.
  • Provides communication of changing clinical or reportable conditions to appropriate administrative personnel.
  • Supports and participates in hospital-wide Quality Improvement activities.
  • Develops, implements and evaluates education programs designed to meet the competency needs of nursing and clinical staff.
  • Monitors and documents employee compliance with designated aspects of infection control and work safety, in collaboration with the Infection Control Nurse, and the QI /Risk Management Director.
  • Plans and delivers nursing education to both nursing personnel and hospital as a whole.
  • Assumes responsibility for professional development and ongoing education.
  • Serves as a clinical resource person to staff members in their daily activities.
  • Creates and maintains effective communication and integration of services among units/departments.
  • Directs and participates in the development, implementation and communication of goals, policies, guidelines and standards for the nursing department in accordance with the institutions policies and objectives, and JCAHO, HCFA and licensing standards.

  • Assists RN Managers and HR Department with hiring and selection processes through screening, interviewing and making recommendation for hire.Anticipates staffing trends and needs and proactively offers staffing solutions.
  • Oversees the productive and efficient staffing of units based on a thorough understanding of the correlation between patient census and FTE standards; ensures RN Managers and Scheduler work effectively together on the staffing function.
  • Provides clinical supervision and assists staff in planning patient care
  • Provides feedback to staff on performance, reinforcing desired behaviors and teambuilding efforts and intervening promptly in deficiencies to reduce turnover rate and formal performance measures.
  • Instructs and guides mental health specialists, and nurses in patient care responsibilities and assignments
  • Demonstrates clinical expertise and sets a strong therapeutic tone for patient interventions; works diligently to reduce the occurrences of physical restraint and seclusion of patients.
  • Reviews safety, risk management, infection control and incident reports to identify and discuss trends with nursing staff.
  • Reviews and analyzes patient chart data for nursing improvement opportunities in the areas of programming and core delivery
  • Performs personnel management activities including direct staff supervision, orientation/training/development, performance management and employee relations functions; adheres to HR policies/procedures, and applicable employment laws, standards and regulations
  • Completes performance evaluations for staff in a timely manner, including initial and 90-day competencies, and annual performance evaluations
  • Floats to other units as needed.
  • Perform other duties that may be assigned.


Job Requirements

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: Must have a current, valid Alaska RN license. Master’s level or incumbent to Master’s prepared required.  Experience as a Registered Nurse in a psychiatric setting required; Minimum two (2) years experience in nursing management role required. Experience in planning and implementing therapeutic programming required. 

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS: Must be self-directed and willing to assume decision-making responsibilities; possess a sound knowledge of aseptic techniques, prevention and control of communicable diseases and safe work practices; remain current with federal, state, and local healthcare standards, policies, and procedures for workplace health and safety; maintain working relationships with staff; possess sound clinical judgment and critical thinking skills; possess good record-keeping and organization skills; perform concentrated and/or complex mental activity with frequent involvement in complex and/or highly technical situations; perform assignments with minimal supervision; work successfully under highly stressful situations; make sound, independent judgments based on scientific and/or ethical principles; adapt to varying workloads; maintain effective comprehension and communication skills; have a valid Alaska Drivers License; and have a  working knowledge of computers.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION: Must be willing and able to execute the patient de-escalation methods, both verbal and physical; able to complete new hire requirements such as State of Alaska Background Check and Drug Testing; demonstrate special training, knowledge and skills specific to age groups, as well as job and/or program specific competency within the first three (3) months of training; be certified in CPR and Handle with Care Training within the first month of employment and annually thereafter; complete all required mandatory in-services annually; be tested for Tuberculosis with a PPD skin test or chest x-ray upon hire; PPD skin test required annually or chest x-ray tri-annually thereafter.

GENERAL WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Working conditions for all employees are as follows, but are not limited to a psychiatric hospital setting: risk involved in the event of aggressive patient(s); workload may include day, evening, night, weekend, and/or holiday shifts. Employees may occasionally be exposed to blood borne pathogens and loud noises. Mental demands described herein are representative of those which must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job, but are not limited to the ability to remain calm in stressful environments; and the emotional stability, physical stamina, and agility to handle stress and respond quickly and effectively to emergency situations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Requirements include, but are not limited to the ability to communicate effectively with employees; the ability to effectively utilize communication equipment; the physical agility to manage cleaning equipment; the ability to read and write. Additionally, the Director of Nursing must frequently utilize physical ability for standing or sitting for long periods of time; regularly utilize physical ability for speaking, hearing, and seeing with correction for close and distance vision, color discrimination, peripheral vision, depth perception and focusing ability.  Speaking and hearing may be necessary for conversing with and assessing employees; be able to ascend/descend stairs and ramps; use body agility; bend body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist; bend legs at knees to come to a rest on knees; be able to extend hands and arms in any direction; be able to use upper and lower extremities to exert force in a pulling or pushing motion. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; be able to raise objects from a lower to higher position or from side-to-side; concentrate amidst distractions; must be able to perform work of a repetitive nature; must respond calmly to potentially volatile clients. The worker is subject to both environmental conditions and hazards, as activities can occur inside and outside with various physical conditions. Mental demands include but are not limited to emotional stability, physical stamina and agility to handle stress and respond quickly and effectively to emergency situations.
