Position Description:
POSITION PURPOSE

The Director, Product Innovation & Social Impact Communications plays a key role in Home Depot's messaging strategy by developing, refining and leading a high-impact earned media strategy that supports the company's product innovation and technology goals. Working closely with the Chief Communications Officer and leading a team of internal professionals and a roster of agency partners, the Director will contribute to Home Depot's growth and innovation efforts by leading the storytelling strategy and delivering measurable results in print, broadcast and digital media. Additionally, the Director will lead social media strategy and drive a proactive earned media strategy for the Home Depot Foundation and lead all aspects of Home Depot's branded merchandise, including direct management of an e-commerce website and headquarters retail location.

MAJOR TASKS, RESPONSIBILITIES AND KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • 40% - Develop communications campaigns that support business objectives in collaboration with senior cross-functional executives in merchandising, e-commerce, marketing, professional services and other departments. 
  • 30% - Leverage earned, owned, digital and social media to gain recognition for the company's corporate social responsibility and philanthropic efforts, including developing and executing storytelling strategies and engaging narratives around The Home Depot Foundation. 
  • 15% - Develop clear and effective metrics to measure progress against objectives and continually refine and improve operation communication strategies, in addition to serving as one of the company's top spokespeople to the media. 
  • 15% - Lead, manage and motivate a team of skilled and diverse professionals to produce world-class branding results. Lead team to produce seasonal and innovative merchandise lines for brand enthusiasts and associates.
NATURE AND SCOPE
  • This position reports to Chief Communications Officer. 
  • This position has 10 direct reports.
ENVIRONMENTAL JOB REQUIREMENTS
Environment:
Located in a comfortable indoor area. Any unpleasant conditions would be infrequent and not objectionable.
Travel:
Typically requires overnight travel 5% to 20% of the time.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Must be eighteen years of age or older.
Must be legally permitted to work in the United States.
Additional Minimum Qualifications:

Education Required:
The knowledge, skills and abilities typically acquired through the completion of a bachelor's degree program or equivalent degree in a field of study related to the job. 
Years of Relevant Work Experience: 10-15 years
Physical Requirements:
Most of the time is spent sitting in a comfortable position and there is frequent opportunity to move about. On rare occasions, there may be a need to move or lift light articles.

Additional Qualifications:

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Business, Finance or Communications is preferred. 
  • 10-15 year experience with a significant level of prior experience in a senior communications role is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies:
  • Experienced in the development and implementation of major public and/or government relations programs
  • The ability to work and be an integral part of a fast-paced, decision making working environment
  • Knowledge of media relations, social media and other emerging communications mediums
  • Keen understanding of the issues and challenges facing the company and the industry
  • The ability to manage professional and support staff members effectively as well as appropriately advise senior corporate leaders
  • The professional maturity to work closely and gain credibility with the company's senior management
