The Director, Public Affairs is responsible for building and maintaining positive relations with community leaders, media outlets, the general public and employees to cultivate a favorable business climate for Cox. Creates an overall Public Affairs strategy to promote and advance Cox’s interest across community, external public relations and employees.

  • Provides strategic direction and leadership for the development and execution of community relations programs aligned closely with corporate strategies and programs including but not limited to youth, technology, education, conservation, diversity and inclusion. 
  • Drives awareness in the community of Cox's residential and commercial products. Collaborates closely with Marketing, Sales, Cox Business, Construction, Production and other departments to ensure alignment of strategies and initiatives for maximum benefit and ROI. 
  • Directs programs which create a positive company image as a strong community partner. 
  • May serve as principal spokesperson for Cox to local media and community. Builds strong proactive relationships with local media to help generate positive media coverage and mitigate potentially negative coverage. 
  • Directs strategies and activities that promote company visibility, builds a strong company image, supports government affairs efforts and increases public awareness and consumer propensity to do business with Cox.
  • Create Public Relations programs that positively position Cox's residential and commercial services to current and potential customers by reinforcing the competitive advantages and overall value of Cox products. 
  • Maintains relationships with cable networks, vendors and other stakeholders to develop and execute events and programs that promote Cox services in the community. 
  • Develops and executes strategies and plans to promote effective communications among all employees. By acting as the communications liaison between management and employees, helps increase employee morale and productivity by enhancing understanding of key company strategies and each employee's role in achieving company goals. 
  • Counsels senior management on importance of frequent, open employee communication and incorporates employee communications considerations and priorities into planning major company initiatives, events and announcements. 
  • Directs the development of strategic plans for the Public Affairs department. Translates strategies for function into short-term objectives and oversees implementation of tactical plans. 
  • Drives alignment and consistency in people practices, management activities, and customer service delivery to achieve goals. 
  • Assists in the development of policies and procedures for department to standardize practices. 
  • Analyzes market trends; coordinates and communicates with others to determine appropriate responses. 
  • Establishes and leverages strong partnerships with key departments and internal/external customers. 
  • Hires, develops, trains and manages employee performance. Motivates and coaches staff to achieve department and company goals. 
  • Oversees crisis communications for the team, to include serving on the regional business continuity team.
  • Directs activities of Public Relations, Media Relations, and Internal/External Communications, Consultants and Community Affairs team in CA. Works closely with Director, Government & Regulatory Affairs, CA and reports to Vice President, Government and Public Affairs


  • Minimum 10 years of experience in related field such as Public Affairs, Public Relations, and Community Relations.
  • Superior written and verbal communications skills as well as strong presentation skills.  
  • Regarded as a proven and respected strategic consultant to key leaders within an organization.
  • Demonstrated results in developing and implementing successful programs and campaigns.
  • Ability to define, monitor and analyze information utilizing strong critical thinking skills.
  • History of strong community engagement.
  • Experience as a spokesperson.
  • Possesses strong relationships with members of the media in California.  Proven success cultivating and maintaining positive relationships with variety of media organizations including print, online and broadcast to generate maximum media coverage.
  • Ability to strategically manage a variety of complex issues with a high level of decisiveness and responsiveness, including issues that may arise requiring immediate attention. 
  • Ability to multi-task and keep numerous projects on track and on budget.  
  • Able to travel between southern California campuses (San Diego, South Orange County, Santa Barbara) on a regular basis. Additional travel required as needed.
  • Able to serve on Boards and maintain leadership roles within the community, including regular attendance at events outside of regular business hours including evenings and weekends. 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office tools (Word, Power Point, Outlook, etc.)

  • BS/BA degree in related discipline strongly preferred.
  • Advanced degree desired. 
  • At least 3 years leadership experience, supervising people leaders and/or individual contributors.
