Job Details

The training program has four objectives to facilitate education in applying systems neuroscience approaches to drug discovery: Specifically, these objectives will entail learning to think about 1) neural circuits that underlie behavior, 2) how multiple circuits interact with each other to drive the behavior, 3) how drugs modulate neural activity differentially based on the neural circuit, and 4) learning about the various measurement methods to record neural activity from said neural circuits.

The training will primarily be project-based. As part of their learning experience, the trainee will become fully immersed in a project so that they can experience the many facets of biological work that contribute to the drug discovery process. The trainee will learn how to design the right experiment based on the experimental question. This entails learning about where in the brain the drug is likely to have an effect based on neuroanatomical findings and subsequently developing a hypothesis on the impact of the drug on behavior based on the location of the neural circuit. The last step is deciding on which neurophysiological measurement technique to use to investigate if the drug is indeed having the hypothesized effect on circuit activity. The trainee will then run the actual experiment that they themselves designed. Demonstrating the mechanism of action of a drug on neural activity and its subsequent impact on behavior is a core component of how biology informs the drug discovery process. This specific mode of thought and the specialized neurophysiological experimental techniques will be novel for the trainee and as such will require on-the-job training. The opportunity to learn new modes of thought and experimental techniques as they relate to drug discovery is a core component of the cultural exchange.

A dedicated mentor will directly supervise the trainee. They will meet daily to discuss work efforts for the day and make recommendations to improve the experimental plan. The trainee will also attend weekly group meetings to expand their knowledge base on other drug discovery projects, as well attend departmental wide meetings to develop an appreciation of bigger picture considerations in drug discovery.
