Job Description

Arbour Hospital is a 136-bed private psychiatric facility located in Boston’s Jamaica Plain neighborhood. The hospital specializes in adult mental health treatment, adolescent and dual diagnosis services. Other services include partial hospitalization programs (PHP) and outpatient treatment.

The ECT Supervisor is responsible for the operational and managerial oversight of the ECT unit, coordinating the efforts of a multi-disciplinary team of treatment professionals to meet the complex needs of patients receiving ECT treatment.  The ECT Supervisor has a strong collaborative relationship with the Medical Director for ECT.  The ECT Supervisor oversees the general care of the ECT patient, starting with the admission process, and continuing through all phases of patient treatment and recovery.  The ECT Supervisor is responsible for patient and family education, as well as hospital staff education.

Job Requirements

Essential Job Functions:

  • Attains ECT department goals and objectives.
  • Follows all hospital and suite-specific safety policies, procedures and protocols, inclusive of fall risk assessment and infection control procedures.
  • Coordinates integration of interdisciplinary team in regard to delivery of patient treatment.
  • Demonstrates advanced level clinical skills and the ability to support others to achieve the delivery of quality care.
  • Assures the delivery of quality nursing care through all phases of patient treatment.
  • Provides emotional support and acts as an advocate for patients and families.
  • Maintains patient dignity, patient rights, and patient privacy at all times.
  • Responds to and manages as appropriate potential or actual emergency situations. 
  • Maintains all patient documentation in an accurate, complete and confidential manner.
  • Ensures overall operational functionality of the unit, including cleanliness, ordering of supplies, safety, on-unit staff orientation and training, and all other administrative requirements of the job.
  • Educates patients, families and hospital staff on treatment regimens and management of medication. 
  • Demonstrates conduct in keeping with UHS ethical standards and Code of Conduct. 
  • Demonstrates professionalism and commitment to Teamwork at all times.
  • Attends all mandatory in-services, safety training and annual trainings.

Other Job Functions:

  • Cognizant of interventions common to acute psychotic patients as well as knowledge of non-violent crisis intervention practice. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers.
  • Participates in administrative activities, such as making telephone calls or composing correspondence on behalf of the Hospital or patients as necessary.

Required Experience, Knowledge and Critical Skills

  • Prior experience in Psychiatric Care, with basic knowledge of psycho-pharmacology and the use of psychotropic medications, as well as basic knowledge of abnormal psychology and application of this knowledge through the provision of nursing care.

  • Ability to perform an EKG and recognize basic arrhythmias. 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers.

Strongly Preferred Experience, Knowledge and Critical Skills

  • Two – five years of prior management experience strongly preferred.

  • Prior experience in ECT and/or one of the following acute care settings: Critical Care or PACU

  • Experience with the insertion, monitoring and assessment of IV catheters.  Nurses without this experience will be trained and assessed competent within 1 month.
  • Knowledge and understanding of regulatory requirements (TJC, DMH, CMS).
  • Ability to manage all administrative and operational facets of the ECT unit, including scheduling and supervising unit nursing staff, technicians and other support staff. 
  • ACLS certification or must be willing to obtain ACLS certification as training classes become available (not to exceed 6 months).

Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited Nursing program.  BSN preferred.
