Administers environmental programs to assure that actions resulting from business decisions comply with applicable laws and regulations in a proactive, financially, and publicly sensitive manner. The ultimate goal is for all programs to be "best-in-Class". Where laws have not been developed, the incumbent evaluates what is required to achieve protection of colleague health and safety and protection of the environment. Maintains knowledge of the PGM EHS and business objectives, keeping in mind operational constraints, to determine applicability of specific regulations, and appropriateness and effectiveness of specific compliance and control activities. Appraises emerging and established technologies for potential applicability.

Coordinates individual environmental efforts into cohesive, consistent programs. Key elements of this responsibility include management and participation in assessment and monitoring programs to identify EHS exposures and risks.

Tracks external interpretations, issues, and case law to identify potentially precedent-setting decisions and their long-term impact on Kalamazoo Site business operations. Establish reaction to congressional, legislative, and regulatory proposals that may affect the Site. May develop variances, as appropriate, for discussions with officials.

Prepares regulatory submissions including facility reports, and technical documents.

Participates with trade and professional associations whose interests coincide with those of Pfizer. External contacts are with MDEQ/EPA agency personnel at all administrative levels, outside technical consultants, outside legal counsel, and EHS colleagues at other pharmaceutical companies. Establishes effective working relationships with regulatory agencies that permit beneficial negotiations pertaining to company interest.

Functionally directs the research, development, implementation, and evaluation of EHS policies, practices, and programs to ensure that the Company meets its goals of a safe and healthful work environment, achieving compliance with all internal and external regulations and requirements, and minimizing potential for chemical releases and adverse environmental impacts. Completion of this objective requires coordination of site wide groups also involving representatives from Legal, Engineering, Public Relations, and medical staff.


Education: A relevant BA/BS or MPH/MS

Experience: 10 years related experience. 8 years with a MPH/MS

Certificates, Licenses or Registrations: various environmental licenses and certifications desirable


Mathematical Skills: Good math skills required

Reasoning Ability: The incumbent must also have excellent leadership, analysis, judgment, and communication skills commensurate with position responsibilities, and levels of Pfizer and agency interaction. Additionally, the incumbent must have excellent interpersonal and diplomacy skills, salesmanship, creativity, practical problem solving, flexibility, as well as excellent written and oral communication skills.

Physical Demands: Must be able to walk and climb ladders and lift moderate loads

Work Environment: Office and field.


Standard work schedule, Monday - Friday

Position requires 2 week rotation as an Off-hours Spill Responder each year which may require on-site response to environmental releases during off-hours.
