The Executive Director, Consulting leads the Consulting team for the Innovation & Insight division of the Integrated Health & Social Services group. Innovation & Insight includes the shared services functions for myConnections, a fast moving, mid-stage startup inside of UnitedHealthcare Community and State (C&S) and the National Clinical team, which supports clinical innovation and operations.  Our team is focused on achieving wellness for the most socially, medically, and behaviorally complex individuals through a focus on the social determinants of health. 

 

Projects focus across a range of our most pressing issues, including business model transformation, operational optimization, affordability, service improvement, new services and products, payment integrity, and regulatory compliance. Our team helps to resolve complex issues, identify new opportunities, and quickly drive results by ing strategic insight, intellectual honesty, and analytical structure coupled with consulting experience. The team brings substantial and diverse health care, strategic and operational consulting, business development and program management expertise to the table. These skills, when joined with the deep knowledge of the business provided by subject matter experts, enable a comprehensive approach to supporting the organization's most critical change programs.

The Executive Director, Consulting assumes responsibility for leading and driving direct reports to execute on strategic initiatives and projects, responding to matrix stakeholders for requests, and serving as a key contact for Integrated Health and Social Services executives.

 

The Executive Director, Consulting has accountability for managing our consulting initiative portfolio and ensuring it informs and is consistent with our strategic planning. Provides leadership to and is accountable for performance and results through multiple layers of management and senior level professional staff. Impact of work is most often at the regional (e.g. multi-state) level. This role is responsible for a significant portion of activity in our business segment.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership for internal and external business consulting working collaboratively across our team, UnitedHealthcare C&S (e.g., Policy, Business Development, Product), UnitedHealthcare broadly (e.g., UHC Global), and UnitedHealth Group (e.g., Optum)
  • Utilize a team-based approach to address such needs as geographic expansion, market entry, customer segmentation /sub-population development, revenue options and planning, competitive intelligence, unique sources of competitive advantage, and alignment of any acquired entity’s business strategy and growth plans with our team’s core business strategy
  • Our Consulting team services are a vehicle for market entry into the fragmented social services sector, and this group is dedicated to innovating and piloting in this space
  • Establish the team’s consulting platform including internal and external consulting services (diagnostic, incremental  improvement, disruptive innovation lean start up, and scale and grow innovation)
  • Develop standard tools and processes for running projects, and socialize across the team, to build a culture in which rapid, iterative innovation becomes the norm
  • Ensure that each initiative is designed around data driven hypotheses and are measured for success
  • Responsible for quickly establishing relationships of trust with potential internal clients (e.g., Health plan CEOs, CMOs, Network leaders) and external clients (e.g., Hospitals, FQHCs, Governments) and cultivating deep, nuanced understanding of client needs
  • S/he will develop engagement proposals utilizing cost-effective models that position myConncetions Consulting to be financially viable; and develop and implement a process to vet proposed consulting engagements with myConnections Senior Leadership to ensure alignment with innovation, growth, and revenue objectives
  • Manage a consulting portfolio with a mobile workforce
  • S/he will oversee the design and delivery of all consulting engagements and be responsible for managing Consulting resources to achieve high-quality deliverables, engagement objectives, and client satisfaction
  • Oversee the distillation of engagement-level and Consulting Product-level insights to inform business development planning, policy positioning, thought leadership creation, and other adjacent UHC C&S functions
  • Serve as a thought leader and surrogate speaker in representing the national integrated health and human services team to external and internal audiences
  • Tend to the values/culture development of the team

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • 10+ years consulting experience in strategy, finance, and/or operations improvement specifically for the health care industry
  • Excellent leader-of-people management, with a minimum of 3 years with direct reports
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and introducing innovations and change into a large and complex organization
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including experience working with all levels of an organization and with clinical providers
  • Experience in hospital and health systems, ideally with experience in health system change 
  • Strong analytic and problem solving methodology 
  • Demonstrated leadership and hands-on experience, strong leader and motivator with the ability to mentor talent within the organization;  able to provide work direction
  • Strong project management skills, business case management, and change management experience; demonstrated history of managing significant and complex projects
  • Self-directed professional with expert-level MS Office skills (e.g., Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, Project)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous consulting team leadership
  • MBA Degree preferred or equivalent experience
  • Medicaid experience
  • PMP Certification
  • Six Sigma Black Belt certification
