*Role Description*

Senior-level scientist/entrepreneur responsible for ensuring the acquisition and advancement of innovative drug development programs from discovery through to Phase 1b/2a clinical stage testing by overseeing approximately 30 Pfizer colleagues spread across two West Coast sites (San Francisco and San Diego), as well as an additional 20 collaborators from academic medical center partners and foundations. The West Coast Site Head's team is responsible for identifying innovative new targets in collaboration with established and new CTI partners, designing and executing research to characterize the in vitro human biological function, development of potential therapeutic candidates, and determination of the effect of these drug candidates on the modulation of target/biological function and its molecular pathway through to Proof of Mechanism in patients. CTI's focus is not limited to any specific disease indication, but rather key areas include cancer and autoimmune/inflammatory diseases.



*Responsibilities*

The ideal candidate will be a strong leader of CTI's West Coast colleagues, academic collaborators, and Pfizer collaborators: West Coast colleagues: the Site Head will inspire and guide a team of scientists with expertise in biology and antibody technologies, as well as small molecules S/he will supervise and manage project teams in the design and execution of key decision-making experimentation to address relevant aspects of the basic and translational biology of targets, their molecular pathways, and their connection to human disease. Such research activities would include utilizing a variety of biochemical, genetics, proteomic, transcriptomic, and cellular function studies focused on human cells of various origins. The Site Head is expected to provide expertise in biology, cellular signaling pathways and biomarkers to fellow CTI colleagues and investigators on projects at various stages across multiple therapeutic indications. S/he will also work closely with members of the biotherapeutic discovery group to ensure seamless and efficient advancement of projects to meet aggressive project deliverables, goals, and timelines. S/he will oversee and be accountable for a portfolio of 8-10 innovative projects at any given time, with support from CTI's leadership team and project management team. Academic collaborators: This person will also oversee relationships with CTI's West Coast academic collaborators, supporting the maintenance of existing relationships with PIs and other academic leaders, as well as building awareness and appreciation for CTI's mission and vision with potential new collaborators. In addition to managing a West Coast project scout, s/he will be a member of the joint steering committees that govern each of CTI's academic medical center collaborations, and will be a key voice in project selection and investment. This includes CTI's network of schools in California and Australia. Pfizer collaborators: An integral part of the role will also involve working with other Pfizer Research Units and Partner Lines to ensure support for CTI programs. The Site Head will also work with and partner with colleagues in the broader ERDI organization to identify new and promising drug development opportunities.The Site Head is part of CTI's multidisciplinary leadership team, collaborating closely with the East Coast Site Head (who leads teams in Boston and New York), as well as strategy, alliance management, project management, and foundation-focused colleagues. The successful candidate will be expected to fully embrace and embody the values of CTI: entrepreneurial, results-driven, and collaborative.



*Qualifications*

PhD and/or MD, with a strong focus on translational science12 years post-PhD experience in laboratory research preferably in industry/biotech settingExcellent track record as a collaborator and communicator, with significant experience leading diverse teamsTechnical competencies:1.Knowledge and molecular understanding in one or more of the following therapeutic areas: oncology, metabolic disease, infectious disease, inflammatory or autoimmune diseases 2.Experience with the drug discovery process 3.Experience with biotherapeutic antibodies or protein-based therapeutics and small molecules4.Experience with direct management of varied scientific personnel and teams, and interaction with multi-disciplinary drug development groups5.Deep understanding of signaling and cellular pathways6.Experience in biomarker discovery and translation medical research a plus7.Experience with genome-wide transcriptional analysis, proteomics, gene regulatory networks and computational biology a plus8.Biochemical, molecular biology and cellular skills requiredNON-STANDARD WORK SCHEDULE, TRAVEL OR ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS Travel required between San Francisco and San Diego, as well as to the East Coast
