Description

The Executive Director, Enterprise Accounting is a critical leadership position that oversees the strategy and execution of all major accounting functions for Cox Communications.  This position reports directly to the Vice President of Finance & Accounting and serves as a strategic partner by engaging with business leaders within the Company to anticipate business issues and drive strong decision making through sound financial management and application of accounting expertise.

The ED is responsible for the accounting operations of the Company encompassing financial transaction processing, financial close, and accounting policy and procedures. This role is also responsible for the Company’s accounting compliance as well as the development, management, and effectiveness of our internal controls. Additionally, the ED is responsible for proactive engagement with leaders throughout the business to influence decisions and provide guidance regarding financial and accounting implications of business activities/decisions.

A focus on continuous improvement including the enhancement of accounting/finance processes, policies, and procedures is essential to success in this position. This includes partnering across the broader finance organization and with key business stakeholders to optimize upstream and downstream processes and integrate improvements into operating plans and goals.  Ongoing organizational and individual development within the accounting organization is another critical success factor including the ability to transform and adapt the accounting organization to the Company’s shifting business model and strategies.

This role is accountable for:
The preparation of accurate and timely financial statements for leaders to make proper decisions;
The management and maintenance of our internal controls governance process over financial reporting and key business practices;
The consistent execution of operationally efficient and effective transactional accounting processes.


Responsibilities:

Accounting Operations:

• Lead a centralized accounting organization with a staff of five directors and over 100 total employees and outsource partners across the General Ledger, Fixed Asset, Project Accounting, Accounts Payable, and Internal Controls Governance functions.
• Ensure the accuracy, timeliness, and consistency of the accounting for Cox Communications financial statements.
• Create and sustain a culture of continuous improvement to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of accounting operations.
• Own the analysis and management of key performance indicators and service level agreements for Enterprise Accounting activities and proactively take actions to improve performance as appropriate.
• Demonstrate a commitment to outstanding customer service to Cox Communications business operations.

Internal Controls and Compliance:

• Develop, implement and monitor proper accounting and financial reporting internal controls as well as key operational management controls.  Set Cox Communications accounting policies.
• Provide GAAP guidance and support to the organization to ensure compliance.
• Monitors and assesses current trends and emerging developments within the field and practice of accounting to ensure the Company’s compliance and preparedness.
• Oversee external audit efforts including relationship between the accounting team and the external audit firm for preparation of the external audit.

Accounting Leadership & Organizational Development:

• Build and enhance a strong team that provides proactive support and results-driven execution of responsibilities to meet the current and future needs of the business.
• Remain abreast of best practices and trends relevant to accounting, shared services, and related technologies.
• Identify, lead, and participate in projects to improve the overall effectiveness and efficiency of the Company's finance and accounting function and processes.
• Develop and maintain effective working relationships with senior staff at operating locations, and key corporate customers, ensuring they understand and value the services provided by the Enterprise Accounting team and respond to feedback regarding opportunities for improvement.
• Liaise with key stakeholders across Cox Communications to ensure appropriate service levels are being provided.
• Manage and coach employees to increase engagement and strengthen professional development. Continually strives to develop talent within the accounting organization to promote individual development and career growth.
• Perform related duties & responsibilities as assigned/requested.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related field preferred.

  • Certified Public Accounting (CPA) designation (active license) preferred.

  • 10+ years of progressive, broad-based accounting experience in a combination of public accounting and business with companies of similar size and complexity required.

  • 10+ years of management and leadership experience at the director and/or executive levels developing an accounting/finance function in a changing business environment is preferred.

  • Advanced comprehension of accounting and business systems.

  • Knowledge of current and emerging trends and developments within the accounting field and corresponding impact on business operations.

  • Leadership and strategic management skills to develop, coach, and direct the performance of a team to achieve goals and objectives.

  • Proven leadership and teamwork skills fostering an inclusive, supportive environment by motivating and developing staff at all levels.

  • Executive presence with which to interact and influence at all levels of the organization.

  • Skills and ability to clearly and concisely communicate verbally and in writing to convey complex concepts clearly and logically.

  • Critical thinking and analytical skills, including the capacity to identify, assess and prioritize competing interests and needs.

  • Proven ability to adjust quickly to shifting priorities, multiple demands, ambiguity and rapid change.
