FEC Design Engineer


What You’ll Do


As a FEC design engineer for our location in Nuremberg, you will define and implement highly efficient forward error correction algorithms for integration into an application specific IC. These FEC designs form the defendable intellectual property of our coherent transmission product families operating at data rates of 400Gbps and above. In your work, you will cover the following topics

  • Selection of FEC schemes according to high-level system requirements  
  • Complexity aware code construction and performance characterization
  • Definition of power efficient encoding and decoding algorithms
  • Implementation of the FEC design into an ASIC.
  • Work on power and complexity optimization for enhanced FEC in the context of optical data transmission
  • Create simulation tools for performance investigation of FEC designs
  • Explore their tolerance towards typical impairments of coherent optical communication


Who You'll Work With


The High Speed Optics Department.

We focus on high speed, high performance optical system interfaces for cost-effective high-density system applications in Cisco, differentiated by fulfilling specific Cisco requirements best.

We see our core competencies in digital signal processing (e.g. equalization), mixed signal design (e.g. converters and interfaces), and detection algorithms (e.g. FEC) using advanced technology (e.g. optical and ASIC technologies).


In the optical system design team we focus on requirements and architectures of next generation coherent interfaces. In addition we investigate and develop signal processing and FEC algorithms which will be implemented into ASICs.


Who You Are

You have strong experience in FEC design and good background in communication and information theory. In addition, you have knowledge about typical features of coherent optical transmission.

Our requirements for this role:

  • Master degree in electrical engineering or comparable
  • Excellent knowhow in spectrally efficient modulation formats and modern forward error correction techniques
  • Strong background in information theory
  • Experience in complexity aware code design and algorithm optimization
  • Good understanding of communications theory in optical transmission systems 
  • Knowledge in ASIC architectures and implementation
