**Role Description**

This is a senior research position within Pfizer's Vaccines Research and Development. The incumbent will lead and direct the activities of the clinical immune monitoring assay group in support of Pfizer's vaccines programs. This will entail leading a small research team in the development, optimization and validation of various immune-monitoring assays to characterize CMI responses in support of cutting edge cancer vaccine and oncolytic virus programs. The incumbent will also serve as a subject matter expert in modern flow cytometry / assessment of CMI responses to vaccination and work closely with various groups within the Cancer Vaccines & Immunotherapeutics Department. It is the responsibility of incumbent to prioritize projects, develop/approve assay protocols and reports, and to assure the quality of data generated. This position operates with limited supervision and directs the activities of junior and mid-level staff. All work is to be done in a compliant manner according to relevant SOP guidelines and cGLP/cGMP guidelines. The position is located in La Jolla, CA, and reports to the Executive Director for Clinical & Diagnostic Assay Development.


+ Oversee state-of-the-art immune monitoring facility

+ Directly manage work of 5-7 scientists; and indirect management of additional scientists through matrix relationships.

+ Establish and manage a GCLP-compliant BSL2 laboratory to develop and conduct cell-based assays on clinical samples obtained from Phase I/II studies.

+ Direct activities to establish and maintain GCLP-compliance within the team, including the implementation and operation of appropriate systems (LIMS, GDMS) and standard operating procedures.

+ Act as the clinical assay lead for the vaccine-based immunotherapy regimen programs providing oversight of clinical sample management and clinical assay development and conduct for the program.

+ Establish and manage a network of samples processing laboratories to support collection of peripheral blood mononuclear cells.

+ Establish and manage outsourced clinical assays with external vendors and partners by conducting appropriate due diligence, establishing contracts and overseeing outsourced work in order to meeting regulatory requirements.

+ Collaborate with other groups in Pfizer, read the literature and attend scientific meetings in order to ensure that the clinical immune monitoring team continues to pursue best practices.

**Basic Qualifications**

+ PhD in Immunology or related field

+ 8 - 10 years of post-graduate experience (preferably in industry but not required)

+ A strong background in immunology

+ Expertise in multi-parameter flow cytometry and other assays to evaluate CMI responses

+ Strong verbal and written communication skills

+ Proficiency with personal computers including word processing, spreadsheets, PowerPoint and relevant scientific software

+ Industry experience

+ Strong background in assay development

+ Experience in managing scientists
