Pfizer is a place for people who strive to learn, grow and lead.Worldwide Research and Development at Pfizer combines research and technology units that have deep disease area expertise with partner lines that deliver cutting-edge science, generating an efficient R&D operating model, to discover and develop innovative therapies through advancing small molecules and biotherapeutics, including vaccines.*This laboratory scientist will independently provide high quality in vitro plate-based pharmacology data to project teams to enable rapid decision making in support of the Worldwide Research and Development portfolio. *This scientist will play a key role in developing, optimizing and validating fit-for-purpose in vitro pharmacological assays using a combination of target-based and physiologically relevant assay systems. *This scientist will have the opportunity to work on cutting-edge science using novel technologies applied to portfolio advancement.*This scientist will work with an interdisciplinary team of Research Unit biologists, medicinal chemists, structural biologists and biophysicists, as well asexternal partners to deliver on the portfolio.



*Responsibilities*

The successful candidate will join a team of scientists within the Primary Pharmacology Group which is focused on the design, development, optimization, and execution of in vitro plate-based screening funnels supporting early Research Unit portfolios. The group also provides the cellular expertise to apply physiologically relevant approaches to target-based and phenotypic programs ensuring integrated support from idea to clinical candidate selection. Disease areas of focus for the group include Inflammation, Immunology, Neuroscience, Cardiovascular/Metabolic, and Rare Diseases.As a member of a laboratory focused on assay development/optimization and execution of in vitro plate-based pharmacological assays, the primary responsibilities of this role will be supporting the portfolios of Cardiovascular/Metabolic and Rare Diseases as well as participating in platform-based initiatives around specific drug target classes (e.g.,G-protein coupled receptors, serine hydrolases, solute-carrier transporters). (S)he will design and deliver high quality in vitro screening data from validated assays to enable hit and lead series identification, optimization, and drug candidate selection. (S)he may also provide oversight and take accountability for the delivery of pharmacology data provided by Contract Research Organizations. Applicants must have extensive experience working independently in a laboratory setting and a broad understanding of biology. Previous experience in plate-based pharmacology, cell biology, biochemistry, and enzymology in a drug discovery setting is required. Also critical to the role is familiarity and/or comfort with high-throughput screening techniques and equipment, and ability to learn new software applications quickly (e.g., ABase, Excel, GraphPad Prism, Spotfire). The successful candidate will be excited by a role with high demands, working in teams with multiple partners (e.g. Chemistry, Research Unit Biology, Structural Biology, HTS, and CROs). The candidate should therefore possess strong collaborative and written/verbal communication skills and an enthusiastic, optimistic attitude. Key to the role is an ability to propose creative approaches for difficult targets and to integrate knowledge across diverse disease areas, screening targets, and cellular biology challenges. As such, (s)he should demonstrate strong leadership skills, flexibility, an ability to function autonomously, a good sense of humor, and be adept at multi-tasking and building partnerships. Successful candidates will be expected to: *Develop, optimize and validate assays as well as execute plate-based in vitro assay and data analysis*Have significant previous experience with multiple assay formats, both biochemical and cell based.*Have a deep understanding of targets (ie GPCR,enzymes,transporters) and pathway biology and technologies to interrogate them*Demonstrate ability to interpret and integrate in vitro data in the context of physiology and DMPK*Be both creative and proficient in designing experiments to address key scientific questions*Be a strategic and innovative thinker with an ability to adapt technologies for novel applications*Have an understanding of aligned discipline needs (eg drug metabolism, medicinal chemistry, structural biology) and a big picture perspective that can assess project challenges and identify critical path experiments.*Display consistent proficiency in automated data acquisition, analysis and quality control; provide timely, high quality data to project teams.*Serve as a resource for technical, biological and drug discovery expertise and mentoring*Proactively respond to project team needs for special studies to answer specific questions*Use robotics and automation in the performance of screening*Be skilled in assay transfer and data management (e.g., assays from Research Units or working with external vendors)*Adopt a continuous improvement mindset to improve speed (turnaround time of screening data), quality, efficiency and/or cost of processes within lab.*Troubleshoot laboratory instruments and assays*Maintain up to date electronic laboratory notebooks and records in accordance with Pfizer policy. *Comply with all safety training and good laboratory practices.



*Qualifications*

*Minimum qualification PhD or equivalent with 4 years of relevant experience to drug discovery in high content imaging and cell biology and/or pharmacology OR MS with 10 years of industry experience*At least 5 years prior experience in a laboratory working as part of a multi-disciplinary team focused on the discovery of novel therapeutic agents.*Experience working with a variety of protein classes such as receptors, enzymes and transporters. *Demonstrated experience with standard in vitro assays (e.g. HTRF, FP, ELISA, coupled enzyme systems, FLIPR, radioactive binding, etc.), including assay transfer, execution and troubleshooting.*Strong track record of delivering high quality data meeting the needs of teams.*Successful experience partnering with stakeholder groups and maintaining a customer focus.*Experience of interacting with other groups in related areas such as materials management, automation and informatics is desired.*Excellent computer, verbal and written communication skills.
