Description The Instrumentation Tech IV performs calibrations, repairs, complex trouble-shooting, redesign, and enhancement of Instruments and associated mechanical, electrical, and computerized systems. This person develops, reviews, and edits instrument calibration procedures, assigns scheduled area calibrations, and reviews/approves completed instrument calibration records. The incumbent performs as a leader and technical resource for a group of Instrumentation Tech III's.

+ Trouble shoot, diagnose and repair instrumentation breakdowns in a prompt, skillful manner

+ Minimize instrument/equipment downtime

+ Provide technical supervision to Instrumentation Tech IIIs in instruction of instrument/equipment calibrations, trouble-shooting, and repairs

+ Delegate and assign instrument/equipment repair responsibilities

+ Support control logistic software and hardware for a moderate level of complexity

+ Deal effectively with all level/area colleagues

+ Show initiative and dependability to work independently with minimal supervision

+ Assigns scheduled area calibrations, balance work- loads, and set related priorities

+ Perform calibrations and preventative maintenance on production and/or facility equipment

+ Follow oral and written instructions

+ Write, edit, and review Engineering Technical Procedures (ETPs) and Instrument Preventive Maintenance (IPM) procedures

+ Develop instrument/equipment trouble shooting and training documentation

+ Instruct other technicians in the intricacies of assigned instruments and equipment

+ Train other technicians in areas of specialization

+ Analyze instrument/equipment challenges and implement resolutions

+ Demonstrate initiative/ability to analyze instrument/equipment efficiency and develop design enhancements

+ Coordinate installation activities of new instrument/equipment with Owner, Project Engineering, and Validation colleagues

+ Instruct the machine/process operators in a proper operation of instruments and related equipment


+ High school/GED with no less than 4 years manufacturing plant maintenance/shop experience -or- an AS/AA or BS/BA degree (or equivalent) in a technical field may also be considered in lieu of experience. Must have knowledge of general trades: i.e. construction, electrical, machine shop.

+ Direct Instrumentation Tech III experience, no less than 1 year

+ Incumbent will need to have the basic knowledge of the following:

+ Excellent communication skills using English language

+ •Ability to read, write, and develop calibration procedures, preventative maintenance procedures, new instrument documentation/records, instrument master records, and complete log book entries.

+ •AC/DC electrical theory

+ •Methods of measurement (metrology) as pertains to calibration of process and facilities instrumentation/equipment

+ •Electrical power equipment (primarily low voltage), including transformers, breakers, bus ducts, and motor control centers (MCC)

+ •Mechanical components including vari-speed drives, gearboxes, gears, bearing chains, couplings, pumps and mechanical seals

+ •Fluid power components including hydraulic components including hydraulic components (pumps, cylinders, etc.), pneumatic components (cylinders, air compressors, etc.) And general components (lines, valves, etc.)

+ •Mathematical calculations as relates to problem solving and trouble-shooting the preceding components

+ •Must have accomplished knowledge in 6 of the following areas with concentrated knowledge in 4:

+ -Electrical control systems

+ -Electronic control systems

+ -Pneumatic control systems

+ -Calibration systems

+ -HVAC/refrigeration systems

+ -Welding (SS)/high purity systems

+ -Machining systems

+ -Electro-mechanical systems

+ -Fluid systems

+ -Computer systems

+ -Controls/PLC Systems

+ Incumbent must be fit tested, maintain physical conditions and be required to wear proper PPE/environmental gowning as required

+ Must be able to work overtime as required including weekends, holidays, shutdowns, projects, and etc.

+ Must be able to work any shift (day, swing, graveyard or split) as work staggered work week, as required

+ Must be available for on-call work as needed

+ Physical/mental requirements include: Lifting (up to 50 pounds), sitting, standing, walking, bending, climbing ladders, ability to perform mathematical calculations, ability to perform complex data analysis, and ability to perform computer data entry.

+ Non-Standard Work Schedule or Environment Requirements include: Must be able to work overtime as required including weekends, off-shift, staggered-shift, holidays, shutdowns, projects, and as required. Must be available for on-call work as needed. Must adhere to safe work practices. Train on all required procedures and qualify for aseptic gowning.
