Job Description

Job Duties

  • Keeps current on and complies with phlebotomy practices for all ages and populations.

  • Utilizes the appropriate phlebotomy supplies for population specific blood draws to ensure the safety and well-being of all patients.

  • Adapts language and communication techniques to convey pertinent information to patients of different ages, cultures, and populations.

  • Learns new procedures/assignments in a timely manner.

  • Follows established procedures to perform routine and STAT blood collection and specimen processing for all laboratory testing.

  • Resolves unusual or unclear test orders prior to collection of specimens.

  • Follows all requisition, collection and handling requirements for specimens sent out for testing at other laboratories.

  • Maintains an up to date working knowledge of all technical procedures in the department and operation of all instrumentation.

  • Makes sound decisions consistent with departmental policies and procedures and handles situations not covered by written or verbal instructions appropriately.

  • Routinely reviews pending reports and investigates and manages all outstanding specimen/test issues and delays.

  • Consults with or apprises CLS, Manager, or Medical Director regarding matters beyond own scope of responsibility or knowledge.

  • Understands and follows procedures to care for patients who experience adverse reactions from phlebotomy.

  • Understands and follows the applicable federal, state and local regulations required for shipping infectious materials.

  • Performs other tasks as assigned by the Manager or Director.

Job Requirements

1. ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS

 

  • Basic phlebotomy skills with certificate.
  • Ability to complete the duties and responsibilities of this position accurately and efficiently regardless of the pressures of the environment.
  • Sufficient technical knowledge and skills to support the needs of the organization.
  • Verbal and written communication skills to support the efficient and effective transfer of data/information.
  • In order to demonstrate competency in serving acute care, and critical care patients, the employee must demonstrate the skills/knowledge/resources of laboratory services population specific learning module. 
  • Demonstrated baseline competency in all areas of the indicated skill rosters meets standard.

 

2. MINIMUM ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE

 

  • Previous experience in a clinical laboratory is preferred.

3. MINIMUM ESSENTIAL EDUCATION

  • High School Graduate/Equivalent preferred

4. REQUIRED LICENSURE / CERTIFICATIONS

  • A valid Phlebotomy certification from the State of California.
  • Current BLS required.

5. WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • All procedures and other job-related tasks involve inherent potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood, body fluids, or tissues or a potential for spills or splashes.  Use of appropriate protective measures is required.
