Job Details

This position will be required to perform cage wash activities, custodial activities, animal husbandry activities and various technical activities including blood collection and dosing of animals. The employee will be required to follow departmental and company SOPS and policies as well as all safety regulations. Employee is trained in providing flawless animal care for all species at the Pearl River site.







**ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES**







+ Disassembles equipment (cages, racks, watering devices, etc.) for cleaning



+ Reassembles equipment and assures proper function



+ Performs minor maintenance on cages such as removing small dents, lubricates, replaces casters and/or wheels, replaces damaged water system parts, prepares drinking tubes and other duties of similar complexity



+ Operates and maintains floor scrubbers, power sprayers, pallet-jacks, forklifts, battery chargers, etc



+ Learns and performs proper cagewash equipment operation and maintenance.



+ Learns and performs proper autoclave operations and maintenance.



+ Transports research animals, supplies, and equipment within the facility



+ Stocks storerooms, cagewash areas, procedure rooms and ante-rooms with feed, bedding, equipment, and supplies



+ Supply appropriate food and water for animals housed in the vivarium.



+ Learn and perform routine animal husbandry and welfare duties as directed.



+ Clean and provide animal housing and associated materials/equipment within assigned animal rooms.



+ Learn the normal attributes of good health, behavior and food and water consumption for the common laboratory animal species. Observe and report status of animal health to veterinary staff.



+ Sanitizes animal rooms, ante-rooms, procedure rooms and other areas within the vivarium as directed



+ Observe and record vivarium environmental conditions



+ Handles, restrains, weighs, grooms (bathes, cleans ears and eyes, clips fur, etc), trims nails and identifies the gender of research animals



+ Collects biological samples such as feces and urine from research animals



+ Assembles, accurately fills, and safely disposes of needles and syringes



+ Treats routine husbandry problems as prescribed by a veterinarian or supervisor.



+ Prepares animal rooms for receipt of new animals



+ Euthanize research rodents by carbon dioxide or anesthetic overdose



+ Provides specific animals with special diets (with or without compounds associated) as directed



+ Provides environmental enrichment as directed



+ Maintains records on animals, procedures, equipment and supplies



+ Conducts census of research animals



+ Directs and instructs employees as assigned



+ Participates in occupational health program and training activities related to duties



+ Follows all safety guidelines/procedures



+ Follow Company, Plant, and Departmental rules, policies, and procedures



+ Performs routine laboratory procedures such as fecal analysis, urinalysis, plasma or serum separation, etc.



+ Collects blood from research animals by various routes



+ Administers vaccines or compounds, to include euthanasia solutions, to research animals, by mouth or parenterally as directed



+ Comprehensive computer knowledge such as email, online forms, web-based training and other basic programs.



+ Performs other duties as assigned







**QUALIFICATIONS**







+ Minimum High school graduate or GED



+ Company Skill Enhancement Assessment



+ Qualified as an Animal Attendant and certified at minimum as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science







**PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS**







Physical Skills:







+ Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, move racks to and from storage and cagewash as well as handle and restrain laboratory animals.



+ Ability to Push/Pull up to a 1400 lbs. Primate rack







Mental Skills







+ Ability to communicate (read, write and speak) in English



+ Ability to comprehend written and verbal instructions.



+ Knowledge of basic math (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).



+ Ability to use the metric system of weights, volumes and dimensions







**NON-STANDARD WORK SCHEDULE, TRAVEL OR ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS**







+ First shift 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM Monday through Friday.



+ Weekend, holiday and after hours overtime work is available and can be mandatory
