A Lead Research Analyst in OptumLabs works directly with OptumLabs Partners and Senior Scientists on a variety of health care research projects and applied data initiatives. The Lead Analyst consults with and advises researchers on all phases of a research project and executes multiple phases of a project including: study design, research protocol development, programming specifications, creating analytic data sets, data verification, descriptive and multivariate statistical analysis, and tables and figures for final reports. The Lead Analyst identifies the need for and leads research infrastructure projects and act as a statistical consultant for the researchers. This role requires in depth working knowledge of secondary data assets in applied research settings. Includes but not limited to testing and analyzing new data and software, will act as a data and methods consultant, and perform data analysis, using both traditional health services/health outcomes methods and more novel data science techniques. The Lead Analyst will contribute to the intellectual design and interpretation of research projects. In some cases, Lead Analysts will oversee the activities of research analysts. Primary Responsibilities:

  • Research and Data Consulting (25%) may include (but are not limited to):
    • Work with observational data (administrative claims & EHR data) in an applied research setting
    • Lead the programing of new analytical methods developed in OptumLabs
    • Support OptumLabs academic, industry, and non-profit partners as a data, study design, and analysis expert
    • Training and Consulting to insure data is used correctly and understood by user community
  • Design, Programming, and Statistical analysis for research studies in support of OputmLabs partners (60%) may include (but are not limited to):
    • Design or advise on the design of studies using observational data, develop detailed study protocols
    • Design and conduct claims data extract and programming
    • Executing descriptive and multivariate statistical analysis
    • Explain findings to a variety of technical and non-technical audiences
    • Creating tables, figures, results
    • Programming economic models
    • Working closely with Researchers and Analysts to identify data issues and solutions to the issues.
    • Complete project analysis documentation according to department standards
    • Work within budgeted project hours
    • Provide consultation for researchers on applied use of observational data asset
  • Contribute to the Reputation of OptumLabs as a Leader in Innovative Scientific Discovery and Innovation (15%) may include (but are not limited to):
    • Collaborate with Partners and OptumLabs staff in regular publication of studies and methodologies
    • Submission and participation in scientific, clinical, and health policy conferences
    • Training new employees and Partners on data use, statistical methodology, and other aspects of observational research
    • Lead and participate in presentations/workshops for internal and external audiences

  • Highly motivated and able to work independently, comfortable with ambiguity
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, strong writing skills

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's, PharmD or Doctoral Degree in Biostatistics, Mathematics, Economics, Computer Science, Quantitative Social Sciences, Statistics, Information Systems; OR a Bachelor’s degree and 5+ years’ experience in health services research, managed care, pharmaceutical or similar field and 5+ years of Programming and data analysis experience in either SQL or SAS; if SAS, working knowledge of Proc SQL 
  • 1+ year of experience working with observational (non-clinical trial) data
  • Competent to develop statistical analysis plans and convert research protocol to programming specification logically and meaningfully
  • Demonstrated ability to participate in project design and interpretation with Research Staff
  • Demonstrated ability to execute multi-step data management and analysis tasks, recognize technical problems and solve problems with no supervision

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong/expert in at least one additional programming language, including R, SAS, Stata, or similar programming experience
  • Data Science experience – NLP, Machine Learning, Predictive Modeling, Data Visualization etc and/or willingness to learn/self-teach these methods
  • Strong background in statistical methods with observational data
  • 3+ years of experience with administrative claims data, EHR/EMR data, or complex relational health care databases
