Our programs have been designed to provide each individual resident quality mental health treatment in a safe therapeutic environment. It is the mission of Newport News Behavioral Health Center to promote recovery from the effects of abuse, addiction and other behavioral issues through specialized treatment interventions provided by a community of caring professionals.

Newport News Behavioral Health Center has an excellent career opportunity for a Lead Therapist to join our team of dedicated professionals.

The candidate selected will be responsible for the following:

Responsible for maintaining the therapeutic milieu which includes overseeing and coordinating the delivery of in-resident, continuing care and family services.

Monitors adherence to the program schedule and assists the multidisciplinary team in coordinating the resident’s care.

Attends and assists in treatment team meetings and clinical staffing meetings, and at times, may need to attend meeting for Clinical Director in her absence

Participates and/or provides group and individual Supervision

Communicates with unit staff regarding resident’s progress.

Communicates, and supports unit staff in correctly supporting treatment plan goals as needed

Assists with mentoring and orienting new therapists to the unit.

Provides admissions personnel with ongoing admissions and discharge information.

Participates in AMA prevention and intervention activities.

Completes an initial bonding session with the resident within 24 hours of admission or by the next business day.

Conducts emotional, behavioral and social assessment within 7 days of admission, and determines what, if any, further assessments are needed (psychological, vocational, etc.).

Transfers the problems identified in the assessments of the Master Problem List, and prioritizes the problems for treatment.

Develops, monitors, and tracks the resident’s treatment plan.

Signs and tracks daily notes

Creates/corrects Initial Plans of Care

Provides Supervision

Covers staff meetings in the Clinical Director’s absence

Assigns cases for new admissions

Updates therapist case-loads, and other administrative duties

Maintains a smaller caseload but may have to take on regular case load when understaffed or in coverage situations

Ensures therapist turn in their notes, treatment plans, Individual Plan of Care on time based on required standards

Coordinates with the multidisciplinary treatment team in order to identify treatment goals and objectives that are clearly related to the problems on the Master Problem List. Ensures goals/objectives are measurable and time bound. Develop individualized treatment plans for assigned residents.

Coordinates with the multidisciplinary treatment team in order to identify interventions that clearly relate to the treatment objectives and establishes discharge criteria.

Completes treatment plan reviews monthly and ensures that progress in treatment is clearly documented in a timely manner.

Conducts group therapy sessions as assigned. Ensures that group therapy progress notes are completed and submitted to medical records before the next group session takes place.

Conducts individual therapy sessions as assigned. Ensures that individual therapy progress notes are completed and submitted to medical records daily.

Conducts family therapy sessions as assigned. Ensures that family therapy progress notes are completed and submitted to medical records by the end of the next business day.

Develops and conducts educational lectures for residents and/or families as assigned.

Serves as a liaison with the resident’s legal guardian and community stakeholders, inviting them to call with questions, and keeping them apprised of the resident’s progress at least weekly.

Serves as a resident advocate with courts, schools, family, etc.

Coordinates and develops a continuing care plan and prepares resident for discharge.

Completes accurate discharge summary for distribution to guardian and aftercare providers.

Facilitates positive and effective communication between different departments.

Job Requirements

Master’s degree in the field of psychology or related field as outlined by the Virginia Department of Health Professions. Active and unrestricted license as an LCSW or LPC in the state of Virginia. Trauma Informed Training and therapeutic approaches. Flexible to work some evenings and weekends to meet therapist, resident, and family needs. Minimum of two years providing counseling services to varied population and one year management or leadership experience.  Prefer Virginia approval to provide Clinical Supervision.
