Position Description:
POSITION PURPOSE

The Leadership Development Experiential Designer (LDED) applies instructional design, experiential learning, and adult learning principles and strategies to analyze, design, develop, implement, and evaluate instructional courses, assessments, job aids, and other learning deliverables for associates in all areas of The Home Depot’s operations. In addition, the LDED designs leadership development experiences intended to generate lasting change in participants’ mindsets and on-the-job leadership behavior using a combination of approaches, including experiential learning, action learning, microlearning, peer learning, blended learning, and guided reflection.  This position serves as a subject matter expert on leadership, behavior change, and evidence-based leadership development techniques.

MAJOR TASKS, RESPONSIBILITIES AND KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

40% - Leadership Development Experience Design

  • Translates business outcomes into leadership behaviors and mindsets and designs experiences and tasks that establish or strengthen those mindsets and behaviors.
  • Works with senior leaders to identify and clarify requirements, business and cultural context, and effectiveness of solutions.
  • Develops performance support tools that blend learning with participants’ on-the-job work to accelerate on-the-job habit formation.
  • Draws on industry research and demonstrates creativity in accomplishing the above

40% – Instructional Design

  • Researches and identifies relevant leadership content
  • Organizes content into logical sequence within and across deliverables
  • Identifies differences across leadership levels and appropriately designs content for each level
  • Advises Learning Strategy Senior Managers on preferred leadership models and approaches
  • Designs thoughtful and engaging activities that enhance leadership skills and encourage on-the-job application
  • Coordinates internal and external subject matter experts to obtain required job and task information
  • Tests and debugs deliverables for quality assurance

20% – Project Management and Communication

  • Collaborates effectively with peers, leaders, and business partners
  • Project manages deliverables and proactively communicates milestones
  • Possesses strong writing and communication skills
  • Reviews and edits material against accepted THD standards for instructional quality and soundness
  • Assists in the interviewing, selection, and onboarding of contractors and associates
NATURE AND SCOPE
  • This position reports to Manager of Learning Design.

ENVIRONMENTAL JOB REQUIREMENTS
Environment:
Located in a comfortable indoor area. Any unpleasant conditions would be infrequent and not objectionable.
Travel:
Typically requires overnight travel less than 10% of the time.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be eighteen years of age or older.
  • Must be legally permitted to work in the United States.

Education Required:

The knowledge, skills and abilities typically acquired through the completion of a bachelor’s degree program or equivalent degree in a field of study related to the job.

Years of Relevant Work Experience: 4 years
Physical Requirements:
Most of the time is spent sitting in a comfortable position and there is frequent opportunity to move about. On rare occasions, there may be a need to move or lift light articles.

Additional Qualifications:

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in the type of work described above in the position purpose and major tasks
  • Bachelor's or above in experiential education, human development, organizational behavior, industrial and organizational psychology, instructional design, instructional technology, or related field.
  • Experience using game mechanics to drive engagement in the learning process
  • Experience evaluating effectiveness of development programs at Level 3 and above (Kirkpatrick, Phillips, Brinkerhoff)
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies:
  • Proficient knowledge of leadership theories, models, and trends
  • Proficient knowledge of experiential learning
  • Proficient knowledge of instructional design and adult learning theories
  • Proficiency with software including Microsoft Office and standard eLearning development tools
  • Basic knowledge of project management principles and MS Project
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
