Newport News Behavioral Health Center is a residential program, for males and females ages 11-21, consist of a cognitive behavioral treatment model that encourages youth to safely explore thoughts and feelings related to the development of positive and desirable behavior within their homes and communities. Our programs have been designed to provide each individual resident quality mental health treatment in a safe therapeutic environment.

It is the mission of Newport News Behavioral Health Center to promote recovery from the effects of abuse, addiction and other behavioral issues through specialized treatment interventions provided by a community of caring professionals.

Newport News Behavioral Health Center has an excellent career opportunity for an experienced Licensed Practical Nurse to work our evening shifts from 7pm to 7am our team of dedicated professionals.

The candidate selected will be responsible for the following:

• Participates in the provision of nursing care, under the supervision of a registered nurse directed toward meeting the psychosocial, physical, and communication needs of the residents.
• Admits residents to the unit by providing and coordinating their introduction into the therapeutic environment.
• Coordinates residents transfer to another unit or their discharge from the hospital as appropriate
• Identifies resident symptoms requiring medical attention, or resident problems and behavior changes and communicates these to the Program Director, Director of Nursing/Nursing Supervisor, and attending physician.
• Makes unit rounds to ensure the safety of the residents and to monitor the milieu.
• Administers medications per hospital policy and demonstrates competency. Ensures that medication consent forms are received from the patient prior to administering meds. Accurately identifies the need for PRN’s
• Documents appropriate re: PRTs, medical emergencies, medical issues, nursing summaries, and first dose monitoring.
• Documents nursing progress notes on all residents daily. Progress notes; discuss interventions used and measurable progress toward treatment goals.
• Maintains professionalism at all times in interactions with residents, staff, and referral sources/guardians.
• Keeps infection control log up to date.
• Provides resident with education regarding medications, explaining rationale for taking medication, side effects, and dietary restrictions.
• Ensures that nursing education groups occur and are documented as directed.

 
Requirements

The following are the job requirements for the Licensed Practical Nurse position:

• Graduate of an accredited Nursing program for Licensed Practical Nurses
• Licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia as an Licensed Practical Nurse
• One year experience working in an adolescent psychiatric or general psychiatric setting.
• Credentialed in the following area: BLS CPR
