Under the leadership of the Business Web Delivery (BWD) Mid-Tier Web Engineering Team Leader, the Web Services Engineer will build enterprise automation systems for all groups across Mid-Tier Technologies and Engineering Services (MTES). They will perform technical assessments, troubleshooting, design, and engineering activities in support of complex mid-tier software and hardware systems comprised of many technical components. Candidates must have demonstrated industry experience along with strong technical skills (programming, database architectures, user interfaces, etc.) and be able to implement solutions to complex problems utilizing multiple types of software development disciplines (conventional languages, scripting, database, APIs, cloud automation, etc.).



The incumbent will work closely with software developers, architects, infrastructure engineers, Line IT technologists, project managers, and commercial software vendors to ensure the viability, performance and efficiency of existing mid-tier systems including all of the underlying infrastructure, software and application components.







+ Deliver automation systems for BTI and projects across Business Lines. This role engages other Business Technology Engineering team members, Business Technology Infrastructure and Business Unit IT teams to deliver solutions. This role shares responsibility for Business Unit IT Project team success.



+ Engineer, Design, Build and Document innovative solutions to complex enterprise problems following software lifecycle management utilizing a variety of tools and methodologies following an automation framework.



+ Assess emerging technology/tools and provide recommendations for practical at-scale applicability



+ Establish standards and implement best practices for web services architectures, designs, implementations, performance and sustainability



+ Strong bias toward reducing complexity and simplifying Pfizer's IT environments



+ Leverage and share existing capabilities to eliminate redundancies and optimize the organization



+ Ensure that every project counts, execution is right the first time & keep line projects on track



+ Shared planning (Plan our work & Work our plan) - measure and report frequently



+ Share and analyze successes & failures to increase organizational learning



+ Make timely decisions based on facts & metrics



+ Collaborate across multiple BTI and MTES service teams to drive automation, self-service and process improvement for the web and mid-tier platform service.



+ Deliver Web engineering platforms and contribute to Business Line IT projects across the Pfizer enterprise. This function will apply broad engineering technical knowledge and will operate interdependently in ambiguous situations across functional business areas.



+ Participate in application design sessions to make sure projects meets BWD standards



+ Install and engineer third party software components (e.g. Documentum, Accord SDK, RSA Module, etc.) in accordance with platform standards



+ Investigate developer's environments and recommend changes in e.g. JDK version, Application Server Service Pack level, patches, configuration, performance tuning, etc.



+ Use tools to identify application-specific problems (e.g. connection pool issue, memory leaks, etc.)



+ Perform thread debugging, memory debugging, code profiling to assist developers to improve performance by developing more efficient code



+ Monitor server-side resource utilization, application performance, SQL prepare statement and execution time



+ Analyze performance data and provide recommendations to project teams



+ Perform UNIX scripting in support of web services and web hosting implementations



+ Perform Technology Evaluations and Implement upgrades to existing platforms. The incumbent will work closely with software developers, architects, infrastructure engineers, Line IT technologists, project managers, and commercial software vendors to ensure the viability, performance and efficiency of existing mid-tier systems including all of the underlying infrastructure, software and application components.



+ Evaluate existing mid-tier reference technologies such as, JBoss, WebLogic, Apache/Tomcat



+ Evaluate emerging mid-tier technologies such as cloud based services and automation tools



+ Research, test, install and engineer major/minor enhancements and new versions of Apache/JBoss/WebLogic/Tomcat and prepare test scripts and qualification documents



+ Provide technical direction and perform engineering tasks for network configurations, firewalls, load balancers, storage management, rightsizing, etc.



+ Collaborate on mid-tier environment capacity planning



+ Maintain security standards for web hosting solutions



+ Educate developers about BWD shared farm architecture and capabilities



+ Support Compliance on any CAPA Requests or Deviations and perform Audits as required



+ Review requests for change and monitor queues to ensure SLAs are met



+ Participate in Continuous Improvement projects



+ Support Escalation Activities and Technical/Global Incidents







Qualifications







+ BS in Computer Science, Information Management, Engineering or related field or equivalent experience and 5+ years progressive relevant experience in the design and development of web-based platforms and solutions



+ Have a strong web technology background with experience in multiple software development disciplines



+ Deep knowledge of Apache HTTPD, Microsoft IIS/.NET, JEE platforms (Tomcat, JBoss and WebLogic) and/or other Web / Application Server technologies



+ Experience in conventional programming languages (e.g. PERL, Python), scripting (Unix shell, Windows PowerShell, JavaScript), database (SQL) and APIs), database (SQL) and APIs



+ Cloud Automation with experience in vRealize Automation (vRA), vRealize Orchestrator (vRO), JavaScript, APIs, etc.



+ Collaborate and work effectively in team settings, frequently in virtual teams



+ Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills with a strong emphasis on partnering and high integrity communication with all levels of staff and management







**NON-STANDARD WORK SCHEDULE, TRAVEL OR ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS**







+ Implement and support the platforms and technologies, including occasional after hours support to meet deadlines and assist in resolution of L4 engineering escalations



+ Flexible work hours to accommodate project timelines or larger initiatives



+ Business Travel to the US annually to meet with Business Web Delivery team and the larger MTES/BTI organizations
