HIM Manager

This position is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining adherence to St. Simons By-the-Sea’s policies and procedures governing Health Information Management and the privacy of protected health information in compliance with federal and state laws.  


Essential Job Duties:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain patient information systems to fulfill the needs of the organization and licensing, accrediting, and          reimbursement agencies.
  • Provide consultative services to administration, medical, and professional staff in the development of forms to capture patient information, objective criteria to assess documentation, and information systems design and integration
  • Plan, organize, and manage the daily activities and workload for the HIM Department to meet the standards set by the facility and regulatory             agencies.
  • Recommend fiscal or budgetary requirements necessary to maintain service within the department
  • Assist with selection, training, and supervision of subordinate personnel
  • Recommend various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers, and vacation schedules
  • Plan, develop, and manage the orientation, educational program, and in-service training for employees
  • Responsible for the timely coding and abstracting of medical records in accordance with the current principles of ICD-9-CM and CPT coding guidelines and resolving technical coding and sequencing problems
  • Responsible for accurate abstracting of patient data in to the computerized data system in accordance with the department’s policies and           guidelines
  • Must be knowledgeable in physician query process for accurate coding
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual statistical reports.  Analyze the data and develop any necessary corrective action plans, if needed
  • Facilitate inspection ore review of HIM Department by outside organizations, such as The Joint Commission; revise and maintain a well-organized policy and procedure manual
  • Participate in review and approval of new and/or revised Health Information forms and maintain a system of tracking current and past approved paper and electronic forms. 


Job Requirements

Job Requirements:

  • Requires an Associate degree or BA/BS in Health Information Management
  • RHIT certification; RHIA preferred
  • Must have at least two years’ experience in a supervisory/managerial role in health information management.
